so we're going to get a kitten |
|
i initiaLLy wanted a ferret, but seeing aLL the kitty pix at the no-kiLL sheLter just meLted my heart. :loveya:
this won't be my first cat, but my first in 11+ years. i used to have a cat when i was kid - she used to sLeep in bed with me, etc.
as a compromise for getting a kitty, i get to name it.
our cat's name wiLL be: practice-baby. (series!1!)

6. That's why I named my new girl "Kid". My Buddy's AKC name |
|
was "Princes Buttercup of Albany". (Imagine my surprise when her papers came back "the Sixth"! Who the heck were the other FIVE?
She answered to "Buddy" her whole life.
sniffa should just cut to the chase. :hi:

13. No, it will shortly deteriorate to "God Dammit" |
|
All kittens are named God Dammit.
As in "God Dammit, quit climbing the fucking drapes!"

27. Or God Dammit for trying to kill me on the stairs - AGAIN! |
|
When I'm walking down the stairs, two of my three boys have to try and beat me to the bottom. When I hear them charging (one is a Maine Coon, the other just heavy-pawed) I freeze in place, let them run past, and inevitably in front of me. I've had too many close calls with these hell-cats!
They make up for their attempted murder by being so damned cute the rest of the time; it's great when I have a classic tabby, Maine Coon Oreo sleeping on the bed (the orange Maine Coon flanked on either side by the black and brown classic tabbies). Pure heaven.

So much more fun to watch them play with each other. And they'll still take up less room and be less work than if you had gotten a dog.

20. Yes, do it. Mine are littermates and have never been lonely and |
|
take good care of each other. They also stayed kittenish because they have always had a playmate around. Even at 13 they still rough house. :D

28. I'm going to second the idea of keeping two of the kittens |
|
For two weeks after my ex moved out and took his cat with him, my Maine Coon was absolutely miserable, he was a family cat and needed somebody with him during the day while I was at work. I adopted my classic tabby and they got along well together, grooming each other and making themselves brothers within a few days. Through a strange series of events, I got back the classic tabby that my ex moved out with and now I have my three sons.

8. regarding ferrrets.... |
|
I've had several ferrets over the years, and lots of cats too. I like ferrets-- they're great animals, but I think you probably made the right decision. Ferrets are much higher maintenance pets than cats, typically-- mostly because of the lengths you need to go to in order to protect them and your stuff.
You've never really gotten in touch with your living space until you've ferret-proofed it. Found every hole, crack, and crevice under your baseboards, appliances, and furniture. Ferret proofing appliances like stoves and refrigerators, washers and dryers, is especially fun. While my ferrets were alive I replaced all of my upholstered furniture, like my couch, and chairs, with futon style NON-UPHOLSTERED furniture that the weasels couldn't burrow into and nest inside. I once spent the better part of an hour shaking a living room chair upside down to dislodge my car keys from somewhere inside and get them to fall out. The carpet sharks had lifted those keys from inside my pants pocket after I'd negligently left them on the floor. NEVER EVER leave anything on the floor if you have ferrets, LOL-- we used to put our shoes on top of the dresser at night because the ferrets would steal the insoles if we didn't.
I loved my ferrets, but I don't think I'll have any more.

While I was ok with the idea, I did keep looking around the apartment and going over the ferret-proofing that would be required...Jeebus.

18. You can not ferret proof |
|
anything well enough. They will eventually find a place you some how missed. They are great at teaching you to put your stuff away if you ever want to see it again. Plexiglas is one of the best inventions ever for a ferret owner. I make gates for the doorways out of it. They are work and can end up costing a bundle in vet bills. That said, I do not see myself ever living without a ferret or five in my life. They are unlimited love and laughter in a small package. Fearless too.

Kittens are great! You should definitely consider getting two, especially from the same litter. I started out with one, and he was so much happier when I got another. They keep each other company, play together, and snuggle and groom each other.
When you get your kitten(s), you must post pics--that's the rule!
