What if somebody took your computer away
for two weeks. Would you go through withdraw?:D

I have actually taken a weeks break from the pc from time to time. When I do this, I find I get more suff done..you know those things that we always put off like cleaning the oven or the fridge;)

I can't really say I'm addicted to the net, but I am on it much of the day. I still get out and enjoy life, I work etc..I just find communicating on the net much more fun/entertaining than watching the mindless entertainment on TV. Only downfall is that time evades you after awhile. How many here have gotten up in the morn, and said to yourself. I'm just going to check a few emails, a few message boards, then head out for a walk, or the store,etc..only to look up and see that 2 or 3hrs have passed and you're still on the PC.

I watched a news story where a couple were both addicted to computer games. The husband lost his job bc he stopped going to work, the mother pretty much ignored her kids(to her credit she did feed and bathe them) they are now in the divorce process.

That is clearly addiction..but is there such a thing as borderline addiction, and does anyone want to admit to it?;)

1. Mine is used for my business
Edited on Sun May-20-07 08:46 AM by DaveTheWave
Everything from production, work related emails and bookkeeping. I actually have two computers that mirror each other with my work software and my admin. folder in case one crashes.

As far as the news I read, DU and the other fun stuff I could do without, find other options or find better things to do.

Edit: How dare me...now that I'm more awake, welcome to DU militaryspouse :hi:

2. Would not mind a bit
might welcome that.

I generally post only during the week at work. I am very busy with RL otherwise. Today may be an exception, because I have horrible crampsx(

I never get on my home computer in the morning because I am running and walking my pooches then. I do like the internet and have made a really good friend through it; she and her hubbie have visited and I would never have met her other than through the puter. I had rescued an iguana and went online trying to figure out what to do and wow, so many cool iggie people out there. Anyway, because of Pagan and the internet (what I named him, RIP) I made a good pal.

My story.

3. As with DTW, I do business functionality on mine as well.
I'll agree I probably have something of an addiction problem. But not a deliberate nor malignant one.

14. Mother Earth and its human offspring were destroying me long before I bought my first one.

Oh, you're using a computer too. Change your name to 'Pot' the next time you call me 'Kettle'. :P

BTW: Al Gore has 3 monitors in his office, each far larger than my one little 21" monitor, and a big TV set in the background -- turned on while he's staring at one of the three computer monitors. He needs three? I used tabbed browsing and built a computer with handpicked green certified gear; the power supply alone has an efficiency rating of 85% - this means less heat generated, less electricity wasted and the quality parts ensure a smooth voltage for the PC. With Macs, you're slave to what Apple slops its computers together with. I hope you can trust them. I wouldn't.

And I sure as hell don't leave my tv on when I'm doing stuff on my computer - with the one monitor. Why does he leave his TV on when he's concentrating on one of his monitors? :P

Oh, I walk to work and as many local stores as I can as well.

Trust me, I do my part as much as I can and I'm no slouch in this area.

You wanna talk about destroying mother Earth, talk to Al. That Time magazine photo speaks volumes. And that ain't my fault.

Oh, and my office is far less a fire hazard than his is. And I ain't no neatnik either.

5. My name is Inchworm
and I'm an addict.

I spend a lot of time using the computer to communicate with someone over the miles.

I did online games for years and one day it was like a switch in my head. Wow! You spent a hec of a lot of time slaying imaginary munsters. I do miss the "communication" aspect of online games occasionally.

Withdraws? I'm not willing to test it. :)

6. I would completely and totally
lose my mind. I kid you not. The black hole of depression would swallow me up.

I don't like to think about that.

But I have cut down a lot. I stopped playing (mostly) the online game I was addicted to. I pop on and off of the computer daily while I get my 'real life' shit done.

There are too many people online that I care about to give it up.

8. BIG problem for me = no computer.
TV I could deal with much easier. I work for an ISP - so I can't *not* be on the computer most days. Other days and in off-work hours I use it for EVERYTHING. Research, news, shopping, music (http://www.slimdevices.com/), and about a million other things I am not mentioning or thinking of at the moment. No computer for me would be like no television for most people.

9. I'd call it "vacation".
Since I repair computers for my pittance, I look forward to those moments I can turn it all off.

I HAVE dealt with genuine computer addiction- I have a client who literally calls me up screaming and freaking if she can't get online to her chat pages (MySpace, natch). It's a genuine modern day mental phenomenon, and can't be taken lightly.

15. My computer entirely or just my internet?
I suppose I could handle the lack of internet, but I have to have my Word, Excel, and Publisher functions to be able to do my job properly.

it'll never know dear, how much I love it
so please don't take my sunshine away

it's not just for DU
it's my news source
my base for political activism
and my research tool for my hobby, but I guess I could goto the library again and look at films.

20. Couldn't do it...
call me an addict, I don't care...I'd rather give up tv (because the internet allows me to download the shows I miss :P) For me Pandora's Box has been opened and I don't think I could ever give up the computer for an extended period of time. I have gone on vacation for a week or so and didn't have internet access but my days were generally filled up with activities and you can bet your life that the first thing I did when I got home was go right for the computer.
