Is anybody there? Does anybody care?
In a particularly haunting moment in the musical "1776," a discouraged John Adams sings:

Is anybody there?
Does anybody care?
Does anybody see what I see?

When you think about the condition the United States is in today, do you sometimes find yourself feeling that way? I have to admit that I sometimes do. I exist much of the time in a state of near despondency over the fix my country's in -- a ruinous war, growing economic inequality, democracy reduced to the morals of the marketplace, a corrupt and secretive executive branch of the federal government, increasingly radical legislative and judicial branches, civil liberties under constant attack. But when I talk to ordinary, reasonable, but less politically obsessed, people -- people every bit as smart as I am -- they just don't see it. Are they nuts? Am I nuts. It's kind of depressing.

2. Mama, Look Sharp
That's probably going to be a very accurate song about the near future.

3. I love that musical!
I have both stage and movie soundtracks on CD. i thought I was the only one that liked it.

William Daniel's character reminds me quite a bit of Dean btw.

Hey, don't fret so much. Even if we don't make it this election cycle. The Reps are pretty much timed to self destruct shortly after this cycle. They are starting to divide into groups that really CAN'T support each other's agenda. They really can't avoid it.

This very well could be the last hurrah for them. Have faith.

4. Agreed
I'm with you on the musical all the way. If anyone hasn't seen it, rent the movie -- funny, thought provoking and historically fairly accurate.
