Are you looking for a dealership or privately owned? But do use this site when you find one you like. Kelley Blue Book- http://www.kbb.com/Here is the link for the Tuscaloosa News in case you are looking at privately owned. http://www.tuscaloosanews.com/apps/pbcs.dll/frontpageNot sure how you feel about a Kia but this place sometimes does a buy one get one free. http://www.serrakia.com/

6. Saturn SLs (they came in an SL1 and a slightly nicer SL2) |
|
are pretty darn cheap, reliable and not bad on gas, especially with a stick. I have the wagon version and I like it.
Sometimes the cheapest way to get a small import is to get the domestic badged equivalent. For example a Chevy Prism is cheaper than the same year's Toyota Corolla even though they're the same car with minor cosmetic changes. Ditto for the Pontiac Vibe/Toyota Matrix.
Other than 90's Saturns (don't get a newer one, they started sharing parts and design with other GM makes and promptly went to shit) I can't think of a domestic economy car I'd wish on my worst enemy. So with a few individual exceptions with small cars the reliability ratings generally go Japanese, Domestic, Korean and European.
Get a Consumer Reports used car buying guide (they go back 6 model years, so if you need a slightly older book check the library) and get a reliable mechanic or AAA to inspect your car before you get it so you don't wind up with somebody else's headache. When I bought my car I had it inspected and then used the minor problems found to negotiate the price down, so the inspection both saved me money and let me plan for the repairs my car would need down the road a bit.
PS Ask your family's mechanic- sometimes they know of a good car another client is selling, or can give you some hints about cars that hold up especially well or badly in local conditions.
