Favorite T.V. game shows, past or present... |
|
Let's see how big of a list we can get.
Does anyone remember Seven Keys, with Jack Narz, who was actually related to Tom Kennedy, who was the host of "You Don't Say!"
But really, my favorite is one I watch every day, save for the weekend. I'll let someone else tell me.

I don't care how much of it was scripted, Match Game far exceeded any other game show (hell half the talk shows) for fun banter.
Speaking of which, other than political stuff, are there any talk shows where the guests stay for the whole show (like Carson used to do)? Imagine, how all that smoking and drinking would go over today.

Don Pardot was the host when I was a kid. It was on when I came home for lunch, at noon, when I was in grade school. My mother was quite good, and always phrased her answers in the form of a question -- just like she was one of the contestants.
I think it's still a great game show, and I think Alex Trebek is a great host.

40. Not only is Jack Narz Tom Kennedy's brother, he was also... |
|
Edited on Tue May-22-07 09:42 PM by Left Is Write
Bill Cullen's brother-in-law.
Tom Kennedy's birth name is Jim Narz.
Anyway, I'm a bit of a game show buff. I can't list just one favorite, no way, no how.
I love the Price Is Right, and was sorry at the deaths of both Johnny Olsen and Rod Roddy. I'm sorry about Bob Barker retiring - it just seemed for a while as if the show would go on and on forever. I also just love the black and white 50s and 60s TPIR that was hosted by Bill Cullen. GSN (formerly Game Show Network) no longer has the rights to air any version of TPIR, which is pretty sad.
Other favorites include almost all incarnation of Pyramid; Password, Password Plus and Super Password; Family Feud (Dawson version is the best, but I also like Ray Combs); Match Game in the Dawson days; To Tell The Truth (original with Bud Collyer and the 70s version with Garry Moore), What's My Line (particularly the John Daly version), Truth or Consequences, I've Got A Secret, Tic Tac Dough, Joker's Wild. Loved the lesser known b/w shows such as Name's The Same (all hosts, but especially Robert Q. Lewis).
Of course I like Jeopardy! too, though it seems in a class by itself. Alex Trebek also hosted Concentration, which I enjoyed.
I loved the Wheel Of Fortune as hosted by Chuck Woolery and Susan Stafford. I really liked the old shopping sprees the contestants could go on after winning a puzzle.
Someone else will probably name a bunch of shows I could happily agree with.

52. I guarantee Joker's Wild was fixed |
|
Edited on Wed May-23-07 05:51 AM by Awsi Dooger
No question about it. If there's one thing I know it's odds and probability. Nothing on TV ever defied basic math more than the wheel on Joker's Wild when it was the deciding spin. A popular defending champ would be losing and down to his final spin. Jack Barry would say the only chance was Joker-Joker-Joker, and then it would happen almost every time. I was in junior high, watching at home before school. That phony wheel would bolt me out of the chair screaming.
I had afternoon shift many of those years, during the baby boom era when schools were jammed. I told many of my friends how absurd the wheel was on that show. Then I'd see my friends at school in the afternoon and we'd be laughing that it happened again and again.
Not until more than a decade later did I find out Joker's Wild was the same crew who had been caught in the game show scandals of the late '50s. No kidding. Once they got another chance they simply rigged the wheel and not the questions. The questions on that show were always easy, so the key was the dollar amount on the spin.
I'm hardly a conspiracy guy. In fact, I get ripped for denying the favored conspiracies on this site. But I would wager anything that show was not on the level.
Let's see, I loved most of the shows mentioned in this thread. I'll also throw in High Rollers with Alex Trebek and Ruta Lee. I agree with Left is Write that Wheel of Fortune was far superior when Chuck Woolery was hosting in the late '70s and the format was somewhat different. The shopping sprees were great strategy to see how much they could fit in under the dollar amount. Then some boobs would choose to put the remainder on account instead of gift certificate, which would make me howl.
Oh yeah, another obscure one I liked was Jackpot!.
Those late shift days were great in the morning, during 7th, 8th and 10th grade. I watched The Fugitive at 9 AM, then The Saint at 10. Followed by 2 hours of game shows before going to school at 12:30. Once in a while I played golf before school. And I got into politics via following the Watergate hearings in the morning before school. The housewives were ticked that their cherished soap operas were preempted.

73. I saw the old Wheel taped in LA |
|
That was summer '77, at NBC Studios the same place they tape the Tonight Show. We went on a Sunday afternoon and they taped several shows. Chuck Woolery and the letter turning woman would go offstage and change clothes between tapings.
That was a very hot July day and it was hell waiting in line outside. I missed the damn door prize by one person. The woman ahead of me won and I was ticked.
The thing I remember most is someone in the audience said the solution to a puzzle out loud and Chuck Woolery heard it and insisted the puzzle be tossed and a new one inserted, necessitating a re-taping. It wasn't very loud and not everyone heard it but Woolery blurted out, "Hey, I heard that," and stopped the taping. When a few people on the set said they hadn't heard it and the contestants also said they had not heard it, Woolery asserted himself and said he heard it loud and clear and the segment was going to start from scratch.
And yes, I remember Alex Trebek's wild hair on High Rollers. Funny how perspective changes. As a junior high school kid I thought Ruta Lee was a bit old for a game show babe at the time, but now that I look at her birth date she was still in her late 30s at the time, much younger than I am now.
