Have you ever gone to a concert by yourself |
|
Since my divorce, I have enjoyed going to things by myself (ie restaurants, and such) but I have yet to go to a concert by myself. The NightWatchman and Ben Harper are going to play relatively close to me in a couple of weeks (Myrtle Beach, SC June 14).
Should I go by myself and enjoy it redardless if I find anyone to go with?
Secondly, anyone wanna go with? haha
Tell me your lonely stories. haha, not lonely but alone and diggin it

1. About 7 years ago, I went to see Junior Brown play. My friends stayed home and took acid. |
|
Whatever. Had a blast. Then I went home and tried to go to sleep while 8 people wouldn't shut the goddam hell up for the rest of the night. Great show, but it's amazing how nobody left our apartment with a screwdriver in their neck.

I have been to rock concerts, street fairs, classical concerts, modern dance performances. If I waited to find someone to go with. I'd never go anywhere. I don't know anyone who enjoys the same things I do, or has the time to spend with me, so...

because of my esoteric taste in music I literally had no friends, male or female, who was interested in groups I wanted to see, so if I wanted to see it, I went by myself. I just love music.
Many of the concerts were free or low-cost.
My funniest one was walking out of bizarre singles dance with this organization I belonged to on New Year's Eve, and then driving by a theater where Los Lobos was playing a special gig. The scalpers outside had over-bought tickets; I got a 7th-row center seat for half the face value of the ticket, and it was a great concert. Totally spontaneous.

when I was at UMASS amherst...at the mullins center.... I met tons of people and was able to go wherever I wanted...jumped to the floor with out having to worry about ditching the coward friend who wouldnt jump the wall....I danced, and danced and had the best time. Plenty of people willing to share fun stuff when you are there on your own.
Go for it!

and i usually have a much better time by myself. i meet ppl, get to chat with ppl i might not otherwise ever have met, and get a better seat if the seats are reserved.
after looking for weeks for someone to go to see Mel Torme with me at one of the downtown Houston concert halls, i finally said Screw it and bought myself one ticket. i got a GREAT seat in the 5th row even though i bought the ticket fairly late, and being all alone with my own reverie while watching and listening to Mel was far better than wondering if my companion was enjoying it all as much as i was.
i still love to go to shows by myself but no occasion to do so lately. (H issues that i won't go into on this board)

Most of my life I've not been part of a couple, so if I didn't go to concerts (or other events) alone, I would have missed out on lots of good times.
Here's an alone and diggin' it story: One year for my birthday, I didn't really have any plans, but was checking the paper, and saw that Les Miserables was opening that week, so I decided to go see that for my b-day. I called for tickets, and just wanted one. The person at the ticket office said, 'If you only want one, could you make it tonight? I have a single seat in a very good location.' I said sure.
So I was 4th row center on opening night. :D I got to sit next to the woman who did theater reviews for the local newspaper, so I visited with her about her job and such, between acts, and a bit before the opening act. I had a GREAT time!

33. Best show of my life, I went solo. |
|
It was a SXSW showcase event. My beau was still living out-of-state at the time, I had no friends who were interested in popping for a $20 cover or a $90 wristband, so I went by myself. I was bound and determined to see Spacehog while they were in town - I loved the cd I was listening to at the time. It was just an added bonus that A3 was on the marquee too, I loved "Exile on Coldharbour Lane."
I got to the club at 7:30, and managed my boredom drinking free tequila shots the tequila girls were handing out. Stood around through three mediocre and overrated acts. Spacehog was on at midnight, A3 at 11:00. Day-um. A3 kicked so much musical ass I thought I was 19 and eating acid again. What a show, what a show. Four bars into the second song of the Spacehog set, I bolted. They were insipid and dilute, and I didn't want them sullying my A3 conversion.
Ten years later I'm still throbbing with the love I felt that night.
Spacehog who?

My wife doesn't like the same music as me. My son is the only one who would go with me, but he's moved out. At clubs I usually stake out a place at the end of the bar. At larger venues, just take my seat and try to be friendly to the people sitting next to me.

|
He was playing a solo show at the Bayou. I was interning at a local television station and the warm-up act (a comedian) was on one of our shows. I helped him out and he gave me two tickets to see Zevon.
None of my friends wanted to go with me so I went by myself (no way was I missing Zevon!). When I got to the show, there were some guys looking to buy a ticket for their friend. I gave them the extra ticket that I had as I didn't need it.
I didn't pay for a single beer the whole night!

but then, I was writing a music column, so I had something to do while I was standing there by myself — take notes and shoot pictures. That said, I rarely had a bad or boring time going to concerts alone. I hung up the music column about a month ago, but I'll probably still go to concerts alone if there's something I want to see and no one will go with me.
On edit: Anyway, you should go, especially if you haven't seen Ben Harper or Nightwatchman. Harper's unbelievable, and Morello's solo work — while nothing like Rage — is definitely worth checking out as well.

seem to end up "with" people for the duration of the show. I will see Marilyn Manson/Slayer by myself this August but the other concerts I already plan to see, or have tickets for, I am with people. I actually go to more movies by myself. Many people I know would stay home rather to go by themselves.

My Ride to a Tull Show in 1978 got sick, so I hitched to the Capitol Center.
I went to a Dead show solo on September 18, 1982 at Boston Garden. It was my last sojurn with hallucinogens. I went to a showing of Friday the 13th in 3D before the show......After the Dead Show, I rode the bus back to Plymouth, and had the walk the four or so miles from the town to a house I was sharing with a Band, in pitch blackness among ponds and Cranberry Bogs and barefooted because my shoes were somehow deigned to be evil. While not a specifically BAD experience, I thought that I had experienced enough mind flushes.

If it's a band I really like I prefer to go by myself because I'm concentrating on the music too much to be in a conversing mood, though Mrs E is the same way so it's not a problem now. I've met alot of cool people at shows hanging out by myself, so I guess it all evens out..

going with friends is a totally different bag, y'know. it's fun, but for different reasons. often the concert becomes about your friends -- be it posturing, staking space, keeping everyone up, staying organized and together, finding everyone to committee vote over the most insipid things... crapola! sometimes they're fun, but often they take over the evening.
going by yourself becomes about the music. i really, really, really love music, so i find going by myself a wonderful change of pace. often my musical tastes don't match others, or our schedules don't mesh, or they got a case of the blahs and wanna go bowling or watch a game... so i go by myself and have a great time. i kinda think of it as going 'with kids' and 'w/o kids'. sometimes friends are great, but feel like family dynamics and maintenance. alone i can go buck wild and not give a toss because the only one in real danger is me. but then, alone you have no one to watch your back in case you are going too wild -- it's always nice to have someone tip you on your side when your out and vomiting.

:) I went to see the Psychedelic Furs in 1984 at Duke University, and nobody could go with me. I'd already bought my ticket, and the friend who usually went with me had a family emergency. I said, "Fuck it---I'll go by myself!" I had a great time, because the music was great and that was what I was there for.
On a side note, during that concert, a drunk guy (kinda cute but very drunk) grabbed my ass. :P
Edited to add: I'd already seen the Furs three times previously at Duke, but they had a new album out and I wanted to go.
