3. Pan Am
Years ago, I flew Pan Am on a charter to Ireland. Free booze was served on the entire trip over, and several people became the worse for drink (not I).

One woman across the aisle and down a row or two decided to start barfing uncontrollably during the landing. One of the flight attendants held the bags under the woman's mouth and knelt in the aisle throughout the landing at Shannon. And managed to be pleasant about it to the drunk-sick woman and the rest of the passengers. She was amazing, and I will always remember her name.

Nothing fancy but chances are you knew the pilots and crew and about 100% of the passengers and you parked real close to wear you were headed. And the safety record - priceless.

19. Flew from Saudi (Riyadh) to Germany on the C-130
then took a commercial back to CONUS. It was a rough flight in the C-130, we were packed like Sardines however, we all wanted to leave that place. The C-130 remains my favorite plane ever, because of that one flight.

so brought back kartouches from there.

I lived near the ROC compound - and my wife and I played team tennis with the ROC team. Most of the F15 and AWACS project people from the AF lived there. It was also a place we could get a piece of bacon every once in a while.

32. A foreign airline flying within the U.S. is called cabotage.
Edited on Wed May-23-07 06:40 PM by ocelot
And few things piss off airline workers more than the possibility of cabotage. If that happens (and the Republicans are, of course, pushing for it), there will be yet more cheap labor competing with us, more airline jobs lost and wages reduced. ANA might be a fine airline, but we do NOT want cabotage!

Even in economy class, BA has nice wide seats and lots of leg room. The flight attendants are polite and the food is pretty good too. I flew Iceland Air last year from Boston to Reykjavik and it was a very pleasant experience as well. The flight attendants dressed just like the stews from the 50's and 60's. You know, the little tailored suits with pillbox hats and white gloves. Very charming!

62. Today? Probably Air France
I travel a LOT, and they go to great pains to make sure you make
tight connections, even driving you to your next flight if there
isn't enough time to change terminals, etc. Lufthansa just says
tough luck, go sleep on the floor.

Old days? I loved the old PSA, New York Air and PBA for regional
airlines. Swissair and Cathay Pacific for International, and I found
the service on the British Airways Concorde to be better than on the
French version.

But the most fun flight by far was on a BWIA flight from JFK to Barbados
in 1981. From frozen NY on Chistmas Day, first a fabulous meal of
curried whatever plus other spicy stuff and Caribbean fruits, and then
the movie FAME, which had just come out. By the time the movie was over,
we pulled up the window shades to see the blue tropical waters and green
islands, one after another. Now THAT was a flight!
