Save me! What dissolves adhesives? |
|
...and no, I haven't glued my doodle to anything. Lately. :)
I'm scraping label glue off of wine bottles to re-use them... what's the common household thing that'll dissolve the residual glue so I can just wipe it off? I seem to have forgotten this important tip from Heloise.
Apparently it is not vinegar... :eyes:

try oil of any type. That usually breaks down glues.

17. It Depends On The Adhesive |
|
Paper labels shouldn't take more than a little vegetable oil for a day or two and a scraper.
Anything other than that, you need to take a look at the adhesive and determine it's solvent.

18. If you just soak the bottles in water for a while |
|
the glue should come right off, no chemicals needed. Of course you may have to let them soak for a while, but if you're not in a rush it should work fine.

19. I've had success just soaking the bottles in water..... |
|
overnight, the glue from the labels just comes right off with a very light scraping motion.
If the glue is being obstinate, I threaten it with acetone.
Only once have I had to follow through on the threat, and it hurt me much more than it hurt the glue.

Stick the tape over the sticker residue. Press down. Remove tape quickly. Repeat. After a few times, all the sticker residue will come up. Much easier, less smelly than solvents.
I learned this while working at a record store in the 90s. We used to take tape of cd and cassette cases like this.
