When a group of musicians can do something like this, THEN
they can call themselves Musicians. Not before.

Chicago (with Earth, Wind, & Fire) singing 25 Or 6 To 4. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3W1zGAD5Fyo

1. I'm guessing that you're not a musician.
(and, no, being able to strum a few chords doesn't count.)

2. No, but I've been LISTENING for about fifty years.
I think by now I'm a fair judge of what's good vs. what's utter crap. If I'm wrong, then it's been a hell of a wasted life!

3. Actually I like that song.
Edited on Wed May-23-07 11:45 PM by Blue-Jay
But that's all it is: a nice catchy song. It's not the pinnacle of musicianship by any stretch of the imagination.

EDIT: You know what? I'm just being a jerk. Had you said "This song kicks ass!" I would've replied "Hell yes it does!" I apologize. I guess I'm just in a weird mood tonight.

sorry about that.

Much bigger fan of their earlier stuff, though. Greatest all-time version of "I'm a Man." Those boys can play...

5. OUTstanding!
I don't know of anybody who ever blended the standard rock instruments with brass and woodwinds better than Chicago Transit Authority, and this is one of their greatest jams.

The Carnegie Hall set were the first 8-tracks I owned, and the vinyl version of same was the first I listened to when I finally fixed my turntable about a month ago.

Just a fabulous live band.

13. Impressive list.
You like LOTS of things that '70s AOR radio spoon-fed you.

Hey, wait a sec - I see Jim Croce on that list. I'd have thought he wouldn't count as a "musician" to you since he didn't have a horn section and a burnt-out singer who couldn't hit the high notes.

16. I think the point is that music - like all art forms
is completely subjective. What moves someone to give a crap about a song or band or painting or sculpture, is not inherently universal.

Chicago was good for a few albums, but I feel that they got kind of lazy in their later days. They are not one of my favorite bands, but I don't hate them (although I don't like Peter Etcetera at all), they're just kind of 'there' and I can appreciate what they did, but that doesn't mean my opinion is any less or more valid than yours.

Take any band in the world and you will find at least one person who thinks they are the most amazing and wonderful pinnacle of music, and at least one person who thinks they are utterly boring, vapid, and a waste of space. Seriously. Any band.

I like some of the bands in your list, and probably a lot more that you don't apparently like, and would have picked other songs than the ones you did in some instances. Who cares?

And frankly, technical prowess does not mean everything to many people: most times a single well-played note by someone who can be subtle hits me more than a blizzard of crap. In other words, I will take Brian May's opening guitar note in the solo for Dragon Attack over anything that Yngwie Malmsteen can shred. Just my opinion, but that one note says more than the ability to play über fast.

31. I feel you, brother.. I know my musical threads sink like a brick in a pond.
That list is definitely one to be proud of. I have probably made several people here on the lounge angry, because I must come off as a classic rock snob, and I regret that. I am working on trying to be more understanding of diverse musical tastes. At the very least, I will become more respectful of other people's likes and dislikes around here.

But, I will still post my sinking like a stone musical threads. I gotta be me!

Just avoid claiming that it is the best. And stupid shit like, "all modern music sucks."

I hate most music made in the 60's and 70's. That is fine. You can hate the music that I like. I don't care if you do. Assigning superiority to any art is dumb and will only lead to stupid arguments.

...other intensive highly-skilled stuff, I still like "Fun Songs"
(Like the one you posted)...and no..I don't mean Kenny G (although he can play MUCH more than what he Puts out on records)

Anyway...Some folks get so tied-up in a certain flavor of music that I wonder how their food taste runs.

I mean, can you imagine ONLY liking Hamburgers and Hot-dogs and never wanting to eat anything else.
Unfortunately, I've run into some characters like that.

It would be like me.. a Jazz Player... hearing a great country Steel-Guitar player and saying .."Aw..He sucks."

Thanks again for posting a song that shows folks just having a good musical time.. :)

44. Kurt Weill was a genius. Now forgotten.
He wrote a LOT more great stuff than just "Mack the Knife" and "Alabama Song" (the Doors did that).

Lost in the Stars from Kurt Weill's last musical Lost in the Stars:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DXBots5bdzQ

Elvis Costello and the Brodsky String Quartet.

Carmen Fantasy by Pablo de Sarasate, performed by Gil Shaham:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aXqrl2gXGDc

Jacqueline du Pre & the Elgar Concerto:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=s7pSFCMRyPM&mode=related&search=

Du Pre was the hottest fiddler of the 20th century, IMNSHFO (in my not so humble fiddling opinion). When I say hot, I mean passionate, not attractive, although she was a beautiful woman with a tragically short career. I was lucky enough to see her play this piece in about 1968.
