Taking a break between Power & Politics: Question for the Lounge
Edited on Thu May-24-07 10:58 AM by lionesspriyanka
so i was thinking has anything happened to you that you thought was a pretty awful thing, but it had unintended consequences that were rewarding/desirable to you?

ex: You gained 20lbs but now people no longer think you are just a pretty face and pay attention to your argument/pov etc.

or

your ex just broke up with you and you are devastated, but in a few weeks you meet the person of your dreams.

or

you are estranged from most of you friends because of an incident. however all these other people suddenly come into your life, and now you have space/time for them. you realize they are much better friends anyway.

some of these examples (ie. the first one), has happened to me... so tell me about yours.

6. Do you have study rituals?
When I used to be in your shoes, I'd take two tylenols and eat tuna salad all day while I studied. And I'd drink tons of Mountain Dew. (Therefore, the masters 20 lbs. :) )

What are your study rituals?

4. My whole life has been like that
My mother died when I was 14 - as a consequence, I learned independence and strength.

I was abused by my ex-husband - as a consequence, I learned compassion for victims of abuse.

I spent years as a poor single mother collecting welfare - as a consequence, I learned to understand poverty and how difficult it is to escape it.

I went through the death of at least 15 close friends before the age of 20 - as a consequence, I learned to value my friendships and tell people how much they mean to me.

9. In the few years preceeding my divorce I gained almost 100 lb
I eventually lost most of it but I'll never forget how awful people treated me. A lot of people won't even look at you when you're fat. I have no patience for people who judge like that. I wouldn't recommend gaining 100 but at least you know who really cares about you.

11. When I lived in Portland I got a healthy beating.
My friend was having a birthday party at my house. I had invited a girl who waited tables at the restaurant I went to every day after school. Well, my friend stole these gang bangers coat from the bar across the street. They asked the bartender if he saw anyone take the coat. He replied in the affirmative and said, "tall skinny guy across the street." Well, I was also a tall skinny guy across the street. So, six or seven people beat me until I was unconscious lying in a huge puddle of my blood. I woke up with tons of cops and paramedics around me.

The girl from the restaurant stayed with me all night wiping up my blood. We dated for about a year after that.

12. shit happens
i learned one thing of any real consequence: i can control nothing outside the space between my two ears.

other than that, they say the worse thing that can happen is death (which doesn't seem that bad), lose the fear of death, then you can truly live.

don't sweat the small shit. 95% of it all is small shit. 100% of everything is reducible to perspective.

14. yes
there is a parable about that, it's below. Once again I've learned never to make judgement about whether anything that happens is "good" or "bad". I can identify with the third one especially.

"The Taoist prefers to look at life events without judgment or interpretation. According to Taoism, the true significance of events can never be understood as they are occurring, for in every event there are elements of both good and bad. Furthermore, each event has no specific beginning or end and may influence events for years, or even centuries, to come. An excellent example of the Taoist view of life is found in the following parable of the Taoist farmer.

There once was a Taoist farmer. One day the Taoist farmer’s only horse broke out of the corral and ran away. The farmer’s neighbors, all hearing of the horse running away, came to the Taoist farmer's house to view the corral. As they stood there, the neighbors all said, "Oh what bad luck!" The Taoist farmer replied, "Maybe."

About a week later, the horse returned, bringing with it a whole herd of wild horses, which the Taoist farmer and his son quickly corralled. The neighbors, hearing of the corralling of the horses, came to see for themselves. As they stood there looking at the corral filled with horses, the neighbors said, "Oh what good luck!" The Taoist farmer replied, "Maybe."

A couple of weeks later, the Taoist farmer's son's leg was badly broken when he was thrown from a horse he was trying to break. A few days later the broken leg became infected and the son became delirious with fever. The neighbors, all hearing of the incident, came to see the son. As they stood there, the neighbors said, "Oh what bad luck!" The Taoist farmer replied, "Maybe."

At that same time in China, there was a war going on between two rival warlords. The warlord of the Taoist farmer's village was involved in this war. In need of more soldiers, he sent one of his captains to the village to conscript young men to fight in the war. When the captain came to take the Taoist farmer's son he found a young man with a broken leg who was delirious with fever. Knowing there was no way the son could fight, the captain left him there. A few days later, the son's fever broke. The neighbors, hearing of the son's not being taken to fight in the war and of his return to good health, all came to see him. As they stood there, each one said, "Oh what good luck!" The Taoist farmer replied, "Maybe."

15. Lite answer: I start projects alot get far into them and then wind up wasting them and starting
over again. And then eventually they turn out much better than the 1st time. Thus I suppose sometimes I'm lucky enough to learn from my mistakes.

I'm not feeling that hardcore today....
