2. South Rim of the Grand Canyon to the Colorado River and back
It's in a fucking desert. So yes, there was some sweating.

18. Go for it
I did it on the spur of the moment with no advance training. Take the right gear and you'll be fine. Just leave cell phones and friends at home. Doing it solo makes it all the more exciting :)

More details are available upon request.

9. There are signs all over that tell you not to do that hike
Edited on Thu May-24-07 11:34 AM by taterguy
But I wanted to see the river and I didn't have a reservation for the Lodge down there.

I did get lucky with the weather and followed the basic rule of hiking in a canyon: Give yourself 2 hours to get out for every hour you hike in.

13. I've done that a few times from North Rim, but never ...
never in one day. Yikes!

I always camped, even if it involved hiding from the rangers.

10. I did a ways down that trail about 15 years ago
I couldnt go all the way down because my original plan was to hike along the rim trail to hermits rest and back in one day. I was staying with my parents at the trailer village at the time and had no plans to overnight down in the canyon.

Atacama Desert with only 1/2 liter of water and a handful of M&M's.

Freaking aerial photos....

And we got trashed down at the bottom camping with an international group of other youngsters. I'll never forget that hike out. Hoo boy.

15. Hiking out hungover? That's hardcore
And I'm guessing that if it was 20 years ago you didn't have Camelbaks.

19. HELL no!
we had no camelbaks. We did not even realize the importance of hydration in those days...(the days of salt tablets, lol).

I was a mere slip of a girl in those days and believed myself to be indestructible. But that was one rough day. That is a hell of a hike. Would love to do it again!

Do they still have those poor mules going up and down the trail?

20. The mules were still there in 2004
I did my hike in one day, 7:00 AM to 6:00 PM. I made it down to the river by 10 and figured that it would be easy to get back up. I was wrong but I made it without too much trauma.

21. Thorung Pass, Nepal
I don't have the distance handy, but we were hoofing it for a few weeks. The only time the two of us were close to a group was going over the pass. Due to the sun causing landslides, everyone collected at the base, left at 3 am.

I've turned my trek photos into a video, rather than leave them fading in the bottom of a box. You can see it at:

It's the one entitled: A Trek in Nepal

Is that good enough? Does it help that it had a 2,700 foot elevation gain? The destination is those rocks on the top of the mountain behind me.

32. I used a cheap, light disposable
I didn't have a digital camera when I did the hike and that's probably a good thing. I would've spent too much time snapping pics and gotten stuck on the trail after dark, and I suspect all the dust and grime might have messed up the camera lens. The red dirt/sand is permanently on my socks and god knows what it would have done to sophisticated electronics.

31. Next time I go to DC, I'll take pics at the end of my walk
I usually walk 15-20 miles every time I'm there.

Of course, that's usually salted with some Metro rides here and there. :)
