Are the schools in your area out yet? |
|
Edited on Fri May-25-07 09:46 PM by pstokely
Today was the last day for most schools around here (they would have been out earlier this week if they didn't have snow days), most of them start again in mid-august (it's been like this for the last few years). It's only in the 60s today but it will probably be in the 90s in Mid-August. They probably schedule the calendar around the standardized tests. They'd save energy it they started after Labor Day and ended in early June. Many schools around here have only had AC for just a few years. Missouri requires 176 school days.

Students get out June 7, teachers on June 8. We go back Aug. 22. Summers are definitely not as long as they used to be.

Many go back in August to squeeze in as many days as possible for test prep. Breaks during the school year have also gotten longer. The tourism lobby has gotten some states to regulate the school start dates.

Pittsburgh just has a shit-ton of holidays, random off days, and snow days, and state law requires a minimum of 180 school days, so it works out that way. I personally would prefer less days off during the year and a longer summer (did when I went to school, too). They're not doing anything academic for pretty much the rest of the year, same as it was when I went to school, which is just fucking stupid.
At this point Dropkid is going apeshit and I'm about to lock her in a pen (she got into a fight with a 5th grade girl yesterday on the bus, after fighting with a boy 2 weeks ago). By December she'd reached all the benchmarks for advancement to 1st grade, so she's been bored silly in school, and a bored Dropkid is a "bad" Dropkid.

on edit:
none of the schools have air conditioning so coming back to school before Labor day is pretty much out of the question

That is always the hottest part of summer, too!

14. Next week is half-term |
|
That is to say, a week's holiday midway between the Easter break and the summer break. Schools over here don't finish until mid-July then go back at the beginning of September.

15. My daughter gets out of school on June 21 |
|
and starts back Labor Day week.
Although I might for next year (not this coming year) put her in a year round school that goes 9 weeks on, 3 weeks off. Their school year starts in the middle of July.
