two beeps-and-a-thumbs-up from people driving by, plus one women who beeped and yelled "thank you for getting rid of that garbage," plus one siren-toot from a local cop.

That felt good. And my town is nice and clean again.

"Keeping America beautiful, one illegal sign at at time." It's a rewarding hobby.

And, by the way, the wire "step stakes" they use for the signs stuck into the ground meake GREAT plant supports / trellises for your vegetable garden!

16. Hey! I did that recently.
Big ass 4x8' signs. Placed on the right-of-ways, supported by 2x4 posts.

I also eliminated over 100 of their small signs on right of way. They didn't place the signs in supporters' yards--they put them at intersections, apartment complexes, and the likes...on the right-of-way.

I think the final count of signs I removed was 136, including 15 of the big ones. It was fun, the streets were cleaner afterwards, and, like you, I got support from people who drove by. :D

of someone else. I'll let you tell me I'm a good citizen for keeping my town clean, but a hero? No. I'm not one of them for picking up illegal signs. Maybe for that one time when I ran into the burning house across the street and put the fire out, but not in this case.

But thank you anyway.

20. They are illegal EVERYWHERE. I'ts called "Trespass to Chattels," which is a common-law
precept, meaning "you can't use someone else's property without their permission."

The telephone poles belong to the electric company. The right-of-way along the roads belongs to the state.

You can't use other people's property to get free advertising for your business. And most of the "businesses" who advertise this way are either pyramid schemes or outright frauds. Like the "We Buy Houses" creeps who prey on people who have financial problems.

29. Yeah, our state law provides for a $50 per sign fine, but nobody wants to enforce it.
The local cops are happy that I deal with the signs, because if I don't, the town makes them and the town highway crew do it.

But that takes too long for me. I'm not going to let them stay up for three days.

Every year, it's the same thing. New crew of sign spammers, and it takes a month or two before they understand that their signs won't last half a day in this town, then they give up. So at least it's easy for me from about June through the following spring.

33. Thank you so much for your useful contribution. Yes indeed, bumper stickers
are as much of a problem as two-by-three-foot illegal signs that are plastered all over our roadsides, typically in groups of three, every eighth of a mile.

You may not mind having your town trashed by those signs, but I do. I have some of what used to be called "civic pride." If you don't, that's OK with me.

But I'll continue to keep my town clean.

my town "trashed" by signs (which it isn't, thankfully, I live in the prettiest town in the country), nor did I say anything demeaning about your valiant efforts to eradicate signs from your township.

I simply stated a truth--that bumperstickers are an ugly eyesore. Which they are.

56. But bumperstickers are on the PROPERTY of the people who have them...their cars.
People can put whatever they want to on their own property, and it's none of my fucking business if they do.

Furthermore, bumperstickers are generally expressions of opinion, NOT advertising.

Opinions (such as seen on bumperstickers) are free speech, as protected by the First Amendment. Advertising is NOT "speech."

You don't understand the difference, do you?

But that's all right, you don't have to understand. I'll do what I do, and you'll approve of it or not, or make whatever comments you want to, and your comments will be relevant or not, and it's OK with me.

37. Picking up trash
My husband and I periodically picked up trash along the entrance way to our small housing development which also led to the public golf course. People would actually stop their cars next to us to point out litter they had just driven by. It didn't occur to them that we were doing this voluntarily and not fulfilling a "community service" sentence.

of nails / screws / washers to attach the signs to the poles, and put they 12 feet up, but with two slices of my cutter pole, all that's left is a one-inch strip.

I'm not actually surprised to hear that you clean up spam signs...glad to hear that you do.

It's gotta be a HELL of a battle down there where it's so densely populated; I'm actually lucky that the twons are small around here, which makes it easier for me to get the message across to the sign spammers that we don't tolerate their garbage. I can clean the main roads in my town and the rouf adjoining towns in one morning...especially when the Little Guy helps me with "sign patrol," which he enjoys doing.

Get your friends involved in cleaning up your towns, too. It CAN make a difference.

(The paintball gun would be a hell of a good alternative, though.)

Print up some stickers that say "EVENT CANCELLED" and slap them on the signs.

54. So you dislike circuses? That's a start. Do you also dislike insurance fraud:
"Affordable health Insurance," which signs promote shitty health insurance sold by UNLICENSED brokers?

Do you also dislike pyramid schemes: "Work Frome Home," or "Lose 30 pounds in 30 days," which signs promote the Herbalife pyramid?

Do you also dislike predators who prey on people with financial problems: "We Buy Houses," which you'll only have to google to see what a disgusting "business" that is?

There is NO legitimate business that will advertise by trashing our towns with spam signs. If a business can't use legitimate, legal advertising, it's a sleazy, bullshit deal.

All the more reason to go out and get rid of those signs. Not only do you help keep your town clean, you also help keep the sleazebags from taking advantage of people.
