Ok, let's all go to the Farmer's Market
Report back in a few hours? I'm looking for some potting plants, maybe some herbs and fresh flowers. :hi:

1. sounds good to me
I miss the farmer's market in my hometown so much, it is huge. Even if I didn't buy anything it was fun to walk around, and sometimes I would run into someone who knew my grandparents. :hi:

There was also a store there right beside it that had the most beautiful hanging plants in a greenhouse, like fuschia and also had all the different kinds of carnivoroust plants too. :)

2. already back (you gotta get there by 8 on saturdays)
came back with:

ground Bison meat
bison sausage
a chicken (dead, of course)
two basil plants
corriander plant
mint plant
eggs
unsalted bacon
apple cider
apple butter
apple sauce
greek yogurt
salad greens
radishes
and probably some more. mt summer resolution is to only buy my greens and dairy from the farmer's market. normally I get it delivered (anyone in DC/VA/MD should check out washingtonsgreengrocer.com) but in the summer I can handle going local.

4. I go every Saturday, during the season
Edited on Sat May-26-07 02:14 PM by mycritters2
This morning, I picked up my CSA box (the Farmer's Market is my delivery site). It has Chinese cabbage, salad mix, Russian red kale, chives (stems and flowers), lamb's quarters and catmint.

I also purchased peanut butter cookies, dog biscuits, cornbread, and organic multi-grain bread.

Now, I'm on-line, looking for recipes for lamb's quarters. Any help would be appreciated!!

I'm getting pretty good at this "Eat local, eat organic" stuff. Breakfast today--granola, whole wheat toast and strawberry preserves, all from last week's market.

Lunch--salad mix with vinegar and oil, tortilla chips with salsa, whole wheat bread and organic peanut butter. Everything but the chips and peanut butter from the market.

Tonight--Probably a tofu stir fry, using the kale and chives, and maybe the lamb's quarters, if I find recipes saying it's good for that.

I'm so glad the market is open and the veggie boxes have started!!

Critters,
with a cat drooling on her foot--high on locally grown catmint

6. Lamb's quarters: use like spinach.
Steam, saute, etc. It's higher in vitamins and calcium than most greens. I'd cook them separately from kale because the latter flavor might overwhelm the lamb's quarters. If the leaves are small the stems should be tender enough to eat especially if you chop them. If it's older greens than eat only the leaves (I'm guessing your CSA is distributed young plants given the season.)

There's a long out of print cookbook called "Greens, Glorious Greens" (Albi and Walthers) and they had great notes on the lesser known greens and stupendious, mostly vegetarian recipes for the more common market greens.

7. Thanks for this!
Yes, they're young plants. I wasn't sure whether to use them as salad-type greens, saute' them, or something else. This info is great! Thanks! I'll check Amazon, and maybe Retrolounge, for the book.

5. I'm back
French bread (a regular loaf and one of those long skinny ones)
tomatoes
edam cheese
huge muffins for the girls
some kind of "hot & sultry" sauce
basswood honey
Bavarian roasted almonds
doggy treats

I think that's everything. We got there with about 15 minutes to shop and merchants were already packing up to go home. :hi:

9. No thanks.
Went to the one in my town today and it took all of 5 minutes to walk through. Very disappointed---bought some organic strawberries for 5 bucks, though.
