1. I think "bad" is a value judgment.
Edited on Sat May-26-07 10:52 AM by Heidi
After working 20 years in mainstream journalism, it wasn't the working I minded. It was all the BS that went with the job, ie "The guy your staff is writing that story about is a major advertiser and thus writes all your paychecks, in case that escaped you, Heidi."

Mayxbe it's the BS that bothers you, and not the work itself. :hi:

2. i think you are right
i am constantly amazed at how little it takes to actually survive.

but i think i am becoming a feral human, i don't think i could tolerate for very long all the "knives that pose as corporate smiles" anymore.

i certainly could never be a proactive self-starting team player.

3. Not everyone is cut out for it.
It's too bad it took me 20 years to realize that being an excellent journalist didn't always support business performance as envisioned by key stakeholders (advertisers and shareholders). That's why I now paint 50 percent of the time and work as a communications consultant for CMW's business the other 50 percent of the time. My mom always told me that being good at something doesn't obligate a person to do it forever.

5. how many people actually like their job?
i'm betting it's not too many. a job is, as it has been said here, a means to survive.

i'm lucky that i'm able to do what i feel like i was born to do, and even so, most days, i'd much rather not get out of bed.

so to answer your original question, no.

I had a dating-incident with a dude a couple months ago who likes telling people he has a 'job' or 'career' but doesn't like to actually work. Comes from a rich family so thinks that 'work' is waking up at 10:00 AM, going to the gym, out for lunch, stop into the office to check his mail, then out to a pub or cafe to chase tail.

Needless to say, his most recent 'career' undertaking lasted about 4 months, as have most of the others.

 WTF? :wtf:

7. I am facing the same dilemma
After working my ass off through law school and finally passing the bar exam, I find I have almost no interest in actually practicing law. I've been dodging questions about it from all sides and have to contend with my spouse's constant questioning about "interning" to get some experience before striking out on my own. I find I don't really want to practice law in Texas - I'd gladly take the California bar and practice out there.

8. I hate jobs
I am the person that always had the cleanest station when I was working in fast food as a teenager, lol. I was raised to be a hard worker and have an excellent work ethic. It doesn't mean squat in the work world, I learned early on. 'Work' is about politics no matter what job you have unless you work for yourself or alone, which I hope to be doing for most of the rest of my life. My supervisors always used to say that I was 'not afraid of hard work' but I realized that 'getting ahead' has little to do with hard work unless you work for yourself.

10. There are lots of us out there.
I don't like the BS that goes along with working and being a suckbutt.
I guess I wasn't a good suckbutt. It's not how qualified you are, it's who you know, and I have great credentials, but just don't know the right people.

Mediocre bosses are threatened by competent and bright people who might make the boss look bad.
