Help me identify this plant?
It's been growing in the yard near the storage shed for about a month and a half now, and I haven't been able to figure out what on earth it is. It's nearly 6 feet tall now, with large, broad, single leaves that are spaced-out well on the thick stalk. I didn't want to chop it down before I determined what it was. It's in a spot where I have never planted anything, there are no other plants near it (save for a few clumps of grass) although there are tall trees covered with Virginia Creeper vines about 8-10 feet away from it. The area that it's growing in is partly shaded and moist, and we live in north central West Virginia.

Here are some photos:

This was taken near the bottom of the plant.

This was taken at the top.

Any ideas?

2. Definitely not pokeweed
I'm completely stumped as to what it could be. I hope it isn't something poisonous. :(

4. Don't know what it is, but by the leaf shape and woody stalk
Edited on Sat May-26-07 11:45 AM by Whoa_Nelly
it appears to be some type of weed.

Have had similar, if not exact, weeds here in CA, and they can grow to be over 6 ft.

Your plant may be a member of the dandelion family, judging by the leaf shape.

Get it out before it flowers.

And here is a WV weed submission site for you:
