Ipod program help request
I just got an early father's day present, a 30GB Ipod. It plays video and I want to convert some mpg files so I can play them on the Ipod. Does anyone know of a good program? I'm a big technophile so it has to be easy to use.

3. sorry about that. I've never paid attention to which formats I import
will it not let you import those types without being changed to a certain format?

(even bigger technophobe, here)

9. A Mac is a much better computer
that never does anything wrong and always works and does exactly what you want it to do. You should check them out.

For PC, I will have to research what program to use as I use a Mac, and I know what Mac programs to use to convert the files.

10. ok
I'm a creature of habit. Never owned a Mac and have been happy with my PCs. I'm not a big programmer/developer/techno person. Just use it to play games, check mail, and visit DU.

6. Two video converters I use on Macs
ffmpegx and VisualHub.

VisualHub is probably easier to use and includes conversion for iPod, but if you get a newer version it's shareware and supposedly shuts off after a few minutes if you use it in demo mode without registering. I used it for a while last week and it did not shut off even with bigger files, so that might be a bluff, or exaggerated.

ffmpegx is freeware. It's more complicated than VisualHub but has a well traveled user forum that already includes answers to most questions. I've used ffmpegx hundreds of times.

13. If all you are doing is converting for iPod
you may want to check iSquint: http://www.isquint.org/

It is the free version of Visual Hub.

15. Thanks, yeah I've used iSquint

I forgot to mention it in my previous post.

I don't convert to iPod but lately I've been converting FLV videos off of YouTube, and iSquint/VisualHub seem to do a better job with them than ffmpegx, for whatever reason. Also, I think I was able to convert some wmv3 videos on them, a codec which ffmpegx won't handle.

7. can you import the file onto your itunes?
if you can, then right click and select "convert selection for ipod" it takes a few minutes but it should do the trick. I had to go and redo it myself to remember how.
