Today is my Mother's Birthday

she would have been 73 today. She was not the "perfect" mother, but who is. We had a rocky relationship at times. Over the last 20 years that she lived, she and I became much closer. She found out she had ovarian cancer 1 month before my son was born. She spent the next 5 and one half years of his life and hers fighting that cancer. Eventually the chemo crippled her physically, and we watched as her will to live was zapped. She made a pact with herself that she would survive until she had a) had her 70th birthday b) had her 50th wedding anniversary and c) her only grandchild, my son, turned 5 as she believed he would be old enough to have a memory of her by then.

She made it to all three of these goals and died in October of 2005.

Significant dates like a birthday or anniversary always bring back such a rush of grief. Today is the 3rd anniversary of my dad's death. I wish you calmness and peace. I think losing a parent is one of the hardest things we'll go through in our lives. :hug:

I'm so glad you and your mom had 20 good years together. My mom was my best friend. It takes a lot longer to completely adjust to the death of a parent than you might expect. Like maybe never? Don't worry if your grieving comes and goes and doesn't seem to be following a predictable timeline. It does get better, though. Just so you know that!
