3. Great. Just great.
Now they are gonna win the pennant for sure.

Haven't you ever seen a horror movie? Never, ever, ever celebrate until you are absolutely sure the blood-sucking monster is really dead.

I think I remember a season when they were 20 games down with only about 60 games left. At least I still have nightmares about it :scared:

5. That's nice.
Boston's pitching, not its hitting, is driving their current success. That was not the case in 1978, and as anyone with any baseball knowledge knows it's pitching that drives consistency.

The Yankees have no reliable starting pitching, and with Roger Clemens not able to get above 91 MPH in his minor league starts, it's not looking likely that they're going to get any any time soon.

Do you really think the 3-0 comeback in 2004 could happen again? It could, but I certainly wouldn't bet on it. Nor would I ever conceive of betting on 1978 happening again.

9. I wouldn't bet on any sort of baseball I don't want to ruin my chances to get in the Hall of Fame
The fact that I've never participated in organized baseball on any level is merely a technicality

12. That's why the name is so much fun to post in any Red Sox thread
The notion that a mediocre short stop could still be inspiring anguish thirty years later just amuses and astounds me

7. Would you bet on that happening again?
Nope. Not a chance.

Nor would I bet on 1978 happening again.

If the Sox get caught this year, it'll be by Toronto, not New York. Toronto's got the pitching to get them back into the race, whereas the Yankees utterly do not.

16. Clemens is barely hitting 91.
I think he's in for a very rude awakening upon returning to the bigs.

18. Same as in August of 1978
Bosox had a 14.5 game lead on the Yankees in August, yes, August. So, as Yogi said, "It ain't over til it's over". Of course he also said, "Here, it gets late early", so it could work either way.

The biggest lead the Sox had that year was 14 games.

26. Oh, excuse me, off by 1/2 game, but it was August and
I distinctly remember being on vacation at Lake Sunapee in NH where my young son, bravely wearing his Yankee cap, was roundly razzed for a week by Bosox fans. He asked me what to say to them and I told him to say, "It's early". You can bet that the next summer he wasted no time getting even, heh, heh, Bucky Dent jersey and all!

I admit this year is different. Bosox have too much pitching this time around. But it is still not beyond the realm of possibility for the Yanks to grab the wild card, though they'd have to play great baseball from hereon out, something they have shown no signs whatsoever of doing.

15. Ya wanna really piss off a Yankee fan? Rattle off these stats
As of tonight, only two teams have won 33 or more games:

The Boston Red Sox (36) AND the New York Mets (33)

Only two teams have fewer than 20 losses:

The Boston Red Sox (15) AND the New York Mets (17)

Only two teams have winning percentages higher than .650

The Boston Red Sox (.706) AND the New York Mets (.660)

Only two teams have fewer than 10 road losses:

The Boston Red Sox (18-8) AND the New York Mets (18-7)

Everyone knows that Boston is having an amazing season in the face of the AL East collapse. There is no catching up to a 14.5 deficit with a third of the season pretty much completed. Not with this Boston club, and probably not with any other. But a few relatively unknown facts about the Mets. Last year, of course, the Mets ran away with the NL East. But they have a better record this year than last year at the same time. Moreover, they have a bigger division lead than last year at this time, even though Atlanta is said to be resurgent. We shall see what happens. In any case, these are fun teams to watch, for sure. Just got done watching the Mets beat Giants in twelve: Delgado touched 'em up twice, including a walk off in the bottom of the twelfth. Yowza.

17. There's one more pertinent stat for this race, however.
There are only nine more head-to-head matchups between the Yankees and Sox this year.

The implications of that are simple - at this point, IF the Yankees were to sweep all nine of those games (and that's a HUGE if at this point), they'd still be 5.5 games back of the Sox. Meaning, we'd still have to tank against what is currently the worst division in baseball if they have any chance of making up ground in the race.

And with the Sox having arguably three aces in the rotation, the best closer in baseball, and one of the best set-up men in baseball (Okajima), that's really asking for a miracle.

Oh, I know to get rid of the rest of the teams. As a Tiger fan I'm ready to say not to count out the Yankees yet. Words have a way of coming back and biting you right in the a$$. :hi:

Whether the Yankees come back is of no interest to me, since i am not a red Sox fan and could not care less about what happens in the AL East.

come August. But that's how I'm supposed to think.

21. Please, go away! :)
Those of us in the rest of the country have long sinced tired of ESPN's daily masturbation over the Yankess and Red Sox.

The Red Sox I can sill tolerate, the Yanks out of the playoffs would bring a smile to everyone.

23. Once ESPN stops their masturbation over Big 10 football, we'll oblige.
If I hear one more story about how great Michigan and Ohio State will be this year, with Wisconsin being the amazing dark horse (yet AGAIN - and how can you be a dark horse every fucking year?), even though they're all vastly overrated every year, I swear I'm going to burst.

All of which is to say that ESPN caters to the people that care about the sport. Sorry for you guys, but that means Boston and New York.

25. The season's too long
to start jumping for joy. Although the Sox have the best team in baseball and if they blow this lead, then they really are choke artists. Good Luck.

I also heard that RC will only be asked to show up on nights he's pitching. That's not conducive to a "team" atmosphere....
