who here has a flat-screen monitor?
(that isn't a laptop)...

How big is it and is it plasma or LCD?

How much did you pay for it if you bought it new?

Really wanting to get rid of this elephant on my desk...thanks for any feedback.

5. Dell 20.1" widescreen here, using it with a Mac with no problems.
I paid somewhere around $385 about two years ago when they were running a super-duper deal. Its definitely dated by today's standards, but is still working very well.

That my sweetie deals with that sort of stuff at her job.
I'll ask her about this tomorrow when she gets up. I know
they just redid the entire office (PCs) with flatscreens
last year.

I'm sure she'll have some useful advice.

7. I have a Sony 17" flat panel monitor
Edited on Tue May-29-07 10:16 PM by smtpgirl
It is pretty good.

Alot better than Dell!!!

No CRT's here, a flat screen is a CRT with a flat screen that is not convex (bows out), a flat panel is a thinner monitor that is LCD (liquid crystal display), not a CRT (cathode ray tubes).

I am in IT and i can't begin to fathom that everyone wants a "flat screen", well I should just give them a CRT, because that is what they are asking for.

SHEESH, I am so glad not to drag those 21" RGB comaptible CRT monitors around NOW~~~~~~

FLAT PANEL THIS IS WHAT YOU GUYS WANT~~~~~~

Sony SDM S81 - Flat panel monitor - TFT - 18.1" - 1280 x 1024 / 85 Hz - 0.28 mm
This technologically advanced computer display boasts a spacious 18.1" TFT LCD panel in a unique and fashionable two-toned gray design. Screen images are bright and colorful, thanks to rich color processing technologies. These unique Sony advancements are complemented by built-in stereo speakers in a sleek, space-saving design, giving the monitor a greater level of flexibility on the desktop while maximizing space.

12. wow, thanks for all the feedback and links
I didn't know they were so big, I don't think this monitor (the elephant on this compaq) is any bigger than 12x12 but it seems like 17" is the smallest you can get. I don't need a really huge screen or anything. From what people have quoted here it definitely seems affordable. Right now this is just a computer desk but if I get a flat screen then I can actually use this desk for other things, which would be nice.

15. Don't know how big mine is...
I've had it for a few years now, and it's still great. It's a Sony, and I got it with a Dell mini-tower. Perfect for college, and it doesn't take up much space.

I'm not sure how much they run these days, but if you can afford one, it's worth it. :)

In fact, mine is brand spanking new, as I got it at the beginning of the month, at Costco, for $200. It's a Viewsonic (always a good brand--my CRT monitor was a 17" Viewsonic, and I loved it, but i needed to get an upgrade as the CRT monitor was now 7 years old, and my eyes needed a larger monitor), it's a widescreen LCD at 19" and it's sharp and bright (in fact, for the first time I actually had to tone down the brightness!). It's got built-in speakers, which are the only weakness--they're a bit "tinny" for me, and not as full-bodied in sound as external speakers, but aside from that, I love it. The new one weighs in at about 7 lbs, a major improvement over a 25-30 lb. CRT model.

I've been online now for 18 years, and all told, the LCD is only my fourth or fifth monitor, going from an amber monochrome 13" to the LCD. Believe me, this one is nothing short of exceptional.

On edit: a link to the monitor I bought: http://www.costco.com/Browse/Product.aspx?Prodid=11174192&whse=BC&topnav=&browse=

I also have another 17" wide-screen LCD (Hanns-G that was $160) hooked up to the iMac. Dual monitors are a great way to go. I would rather have a couple small wide-screens than a single big one.

It's a 19-inch, Medion Flat-Pro. He loves it, and I don't remember how much we paid for it. He's seriously considering getting a much bigger flat-screen monitor this summer.

I was there for 14 years, including my time at NeXT. Mostly I worked on the developer tools. I was tech lead on Xcode and managed the compiler team for a few years.

And no, I can't fix your Xcode bugs ;)

large package deals. Sorry that's not much help.
