I've got "turf toe"
And before you laugh, let me tell you that it hurts like a sumbitch.

Here's a nice graphic of the condition:

3. Some jackass on the train this AM stepped on my foot.
I would have punched him in the lips if I could see through all the stars. Holy crap that hurt.

6. Have learned that best way to help it heal
is to wear shoes that won't allow for the bending of the toe.

7. Funny you should mention that.
I've been wearing combat boots all day (I'm in the Army) and my toe actually feels ok. I'm walking around kinda slow, but it doesn't hurt nearly as much as it did when I was wearing Tevas.

9. Last time I had Turf Toe was breaking in new boots
Boots similar to Doc Martins. They were very stiff and I was forcing (not consciously) the boot to bend as I walked all day in them. It took 2 months before I healed. My previous injury was from wearing pointe shoes (ballet)...again a forcing (this time consciously) the bending of a stiff-toed shoe that also had a steel shank.

I now know that re: my boots, which I love, need to be worn a small amount of time until they do become flexible.

2. does that only affect the big toe?
I get pain in the joints where my toes join my foot, but not so much near the big toe... more towards the middle of my foot.

(not that I'm expecting a diagnosis here... just wondering if it's even a possibility)

8. The technical diagnosis of turf toe is a sprain of the metatarsalphalengeal joint
since you have MTP joints on all your toes, it is possible to sprain them but the big toe is much more common because it is the biggest toe and it is where most people push off from. Turf toe is an acute injury if you are dealing with a chronic pain, chances are that is something else...metatarsalgia (a catch all term for metatarsal (foot bone) especially if your second toe is longer than the big one
