Why Do People Take Themselves So Seriously on Msg Boards, Not Talking About DU
Now, I'm not talking about a message board like DU wherein we discuss serious, life and death issues, but on non-political message boards, people get crazed with power.

For instance, there's the super-posters who have a huge number of posts and because of that think they're master of the message board.

Then, there are message boards wherein if someone makes a point that's different from the herd, then they're pounced upon.

I'm just going to stick to DU. There's a lot of pent up hostility in people online.

2. No, It's Not DU. It's A MSG Board About A Radio Show
I didn't even make a negative comment about the show, and I got pounced on.

3. It's all over the place.
Some messageboards even give "popularity" points for more posts.

4. I once posted a comment on a musicians' message board...
I can't even remember what it was. But there was a regular poster who always came across like a major snoot, who disagreed with me. When I replied with facts to support my position, he said something to the effect of "How DARE you question my superior knowledge!"

How dare I, indeed.

5. You should try the Fidonet...
I've been banned from two forums there, myself. :-)

Both political, and both dominated by Bushbots.

7. A Message Board Gives People the License to be Rude
Because in real life they'd get their head knocked off.

8. I finally quit posting on a couple of boards, and even reading them
because of stuff like you are describing.

The toxicity is palpable. Even on some list servs that I belong to for work, the childish and rude behavior is enough to make you hurl.

I think it's because people can say rude things and not get their heads knocked off over the 'net, where as in real life, someone would be pretty likely to do them some serious harm for talking like that.

On one list serv that I HAVE to have, one poster was so friggin' obnoxious, when she lost her job, I was actually not sad to see her go. Mean, I know, but boy it sure became a nicer, calmer place without her pomposity and know it all behavior.

9. It happens all over the net
And I know DU is a "serious" website, but sometimes I wonder if people realize that for the most part, they aren't too well known outside of these forums..lol.

People get into these knock down drag outs on here and then they announce they are putting the person on "ignore", like that really matters in the scheme of the universe.

The internets are a curious bunch of tubes to watch, and they can be pretty silly.
