If you feel some sort of superiority in having no one on ignore
do you have a similar sense in watching whatever's on teevee?

If you turn it on and it's showing Faux "News," do you continue watching because "It's only a news program and there's nothing to get so upset about that I'd change the channel"?

1. No.
I don't feel superior about having noone ignore.
As I've stated before, it's just how I do things. I only rarely block people on IM either. About 6-7 years ago, some jerk would harass me constantly with a whole mass of screennames that he had...must've blocked about 20 sn's from one stupid asshole.
I mean, I would ignore someone if I truly felt they were harassing me.

16. That's fine, but
the question wasn't "Do you feel superior," but "If you feel superior."

From what I've gathered, many seem to — as if using ignore means one hasn't the fortitude to confront one's antagonist(s).

I say, why invite confrontation?

9. It's an individual decision
I do see people who call those who use the feature as 'weak' as similar to those who parrot the fact that they don't have a tv. So what? Good for you!

If I hadn't removed an ignore choice a few days ago, I wouldn't have received an unsolicited butt-shot via pm.

If my girlfriend HAD used the ignore feature, she also wouldn't have received such, without warning, while at work.

Like anything in life, there's a spectrum of quality on the Internet. Unlike the Internet, you can't block out everything you don't like in real life. This is the amusing point that ignorophobes love to bring up. Blocking someone on the Internet is NOT hiding your head in the sand and doesn't reflect on you as a person one single bit.

The Internet != Real Life

20. I was thinking the same thing reading that other thread
Edited on Wed May-30-07 07:53 PM by WildEyedLiberal
Some people seem to think that having no one on ignore speaks to their open-mindedness ("no opinion threatens me so much that I have to block it out!") or their fortitude ("words over a computer screen don't bother me, I have a thick skin!").

For the longest time I felt the same way. One person on my ignore list is extremely hateful and vindictive and said some really vicious personal things about me. I thought that they would "win" if I put them on ignore - after all, who would defend me from their slander, or who would correct their lies in GD if I couldn't see their posts? It made my DU experience MISERABLE. Why should I put up with that when I don't have to? It doesn't make me a "stronger person" to read the garbage and ignore it, versus not reading it and ignoring it. If this person is so miserable and petty that they have nothing better to do than spend all day on DU stalking and flaming people they hate, then that's their problem - not mine. I put them on ignore. Problem solved. My DU experience has improved immeasurably, and if that other person is still posting hate - again, that's their problem. I'm not the one who has to live with the vitriol - they are.

A few other people on my list consistently post flamebait and lies in GD that are specifically on the one or two issues that really get under my skin, and they do it just to bait people. So I put them on ignore to utterly remove any possibility of being baited. I'm not going to get tombstoned because I let some idiot in GD who posts flamebait for the fun of it get under my skin. So not worth it.

DU would be a much better site if more people utilized the ignore feature instead of feeling "morally" obligated to get in the same flamewar with the same assholes that they know they hate over and over again.

22. A better analogy would be forcing your cable company to program out the channel
So you have no chance of ever watching it. You can ignore someone or something just by not paying attention to it--you don't have to artificially cut it out of existence.

27. No, that's not an accurate analogy.
We're not forcing DU to cut anyone out of DU altogether.

And it's not as if we have "no chance" to take an ignored member off ignore. We can remove people from our ignore lists at will.

34. No, it's not forcing the entity (DU, cable company, whatever) to do anything.
It's like personally blocking a channel. I can always unblock it, just like I can always un-ignore someone. Ignoring a member (or blocking a channel) does not mean there's "no chance" for interaction ever again.

29. I don't understand the comparison at all
You can switch to a different thread or forum the same way you click the channel. In fact, there should be far less need to put someone on ignore than switch a channel. If I tune into FOX News there's only one thing on that screen at a time. If I'm in a thread there will be dozens of posters to prioritize and respond to, not merely the one or two who might irritate me.

I've never put anyone on ignore. It has nothing to do with feeling superior. I never even think about the ignore function until someone starts a thread bragging about using the ignore function. I honestly believe there should be a separate forum, so posters can giggle about that and compare their ignore lists and reasoning. As is, they are the most tedious threads on DU.

If I don't want to pay attention to someone on DU, I just don't read their posts.

Same damn thing.

I don't block the programs from being able to be tuned in on my TV.
