Then you try to weasel out of it.

then this isn't an argument that could ever be won w/ you, at a certain point common sense should be the basis of an argument rather than simple nitpicking

135. Common sense is being careful with language or not giving a shit when people call you on it
Your post says the "whole lot" of 70s rock. That covers a lot of ground and a lot of great rock. (Big Star, the Concert for Bangladesh, punk rock, new wave, yadda yadda yadda) U2 spent 40 percent of that decade rocking out so I think they fit in with that overbroad generalization you made.

171. Sigh
Just google 70's rock and look at the million lists of bands that are encompassed in that title, and I defy you to find 2 that include U2. You're just being anal to be anal. '70's rock' maybe shouldn't be a term that's used, however it is one that is, rather commonly.

It was very common for punk bands back in the 80s to viciously thrash through material by Duran Duran, Spandau Ballet, Depeche Mode and other foppish twits.
I was guilty of it myself. Now this codger will leave you alone :)

87. I agree, based on what I've heard by them
One of my best friends always keeps up with all of the new indie and indie-type stuff, so I hear a good number of these bands from hanging out with him. (The majority of my favorite music is thirty-forty years old.) So since he's also a "Pitchfork Media" addict I get to hear from all the bands that Pitchfork praises to death, including the Arcade Fire. Well, after several tracks, I (as usual) didn't get what the critics were falling all over themselves about. It wasn't all bad, but was it really the best album of '05 (I think that's the year the debut was released) that the critics made it out to be?

91. I'm an Offspring fan, but
I can't really disagree with your statement, either! I think his often grating voice is part of the band's appeal. Songs like "Come out and Play" and "I Choose" just wouldn't work as well if they weren't sung by a singer with a grating voice, IMHO. I would disagree with the idea that the band is overrated, though, as I'd be a lot more likely to have to defend being a fan of them to someone than I would one of the many bands loved by critics and the "cool kids."

Maybe it's impossible to separate his politics from his music but I think that's a large part of his appeal. You hear him singing and you think he's singing about you, or people you love. I'm not a big fan and I've never seen him live but some of his performances move me everytime I hear them, especially Nebraska and "I Ain't Got No Home", his contribution to the Leadbelly/Woody Guthrie tribute CD.

Edited on Fri Jun-01-07 08:53 AM by Zavulon
True, I didn't pay a lot of attention to the lyrics or anything, so if he gave away his leanings in any of his songs I missed it. All I remember is bad singing, nothing spectacular musically, and still a lot of hype. It's not impossible for me to separate his politics from his music at all; in my view his music sucks.

When he went pop, with shit such as "Dancing in the Dark," I was absolutely aghast. "Born to Run" was perhaps the most overrated song in the history of music, but at least it wasn't actually BAD. His pop was absolutely wretched.

"With or Without You" is good. But they never get more complex in their music. It stays really simple. The Edge does the same chimy thing all the time. No fancy arpeggios or anything interesting. That's not enough to keep my attention.

29. Queen
Freddie Mercury outpreened and outposed even Bono, and his warbling was more melodramatic than operatic.

Brian May proved that effects pedals can mask pedestrian chops quite well. Chicken shit does not make chicken salad, however.

That, and they should be damned to the farthest reaches of the galaxy for their crypto-fascist chant "We Will Rock You", which still moves simpletons at sporting events everywhere to mindlessly keep in time to the 'beat'. :puke:

84. Yeah, and I still love 'em!
Mercury wasn't trying to be operatic, he was trying to be rocker. Rock is melodramatic, or it's crap.

As for "We will rock you," it's annoying as hell, but it's absolute proof that what marks a great rock band is how well they get people's blood pumping. Give me Queen over the bland, pretentiously misguided wannabees like Zeplin, Steely Dan, or Rush, anyday. Although I have to admit that I can enjoy Rush if I tune out the noise and just listen to the drumming.

Furby's inane blather drives me up a wall, and they frankly deserve prison terms for lifting "Misirlou" by Dick Dale and making a crappy pop-rap ditty out of it. You don't go wrecking a great guitar song like that, nosir. And that horrid My Humps song...aaiiieeeeeeee! Make it stop!!!!!

(Alanis's parody of My Humps, however, is side-splittingly funny...I almost peed my pants!)

And who was it that made a disposable pop-rap tune out of the guitar intro to "Ventura Highway" by America? Can't these nitwits come up with their own riffs?

And you're right, Gary is a tad "unapproachable". I've also heard that John Strawberry Fields is a total dickhead, too. It seems that the less talented you are, the more unapproachable you are.

For example, I met Greg Norton from Husker Du last weekend when I was at his restaurant. Talk about approachable! Not only did he talk food and wine, he also talked about music and even sold me his new CD! He was utterly cool, even though that night my gf were only ordering a couple drinks and appetizers.

Lots of people cared a whole lot about Nirvana way before Kurt Cobain killed himself. And their style was imitated for a decade after that across lots of genres.

but boy, do they sound cool when you're on acid.

That's the appeal.

But, I imagine you really haven't spent much time listening to them. They were (are) an incredible band.

149. years listening to them, unfortunately
I had a roommate who smoked bongs for breakfast and listened to the dead all day long, every day for two years.

That's enough punishment for anyone.

Sam Cooke - Could sing
Jerry Garcia - Couldn't

116. I've loved the Velvets for over 30 years now, but I agree that they are overrated...
Lou Reed is my favorite artist in all pop music and I hate to hear sheeplike twits say "Reed did his best work with the Velvet Underground" That is utter nonsense. Reed continued to write incredible songs post-Velvets and he certainly got to work with much better drummers and guitarplayers

115. The Beach Boys
Cry all you want about their amazing harmonies, how Brian Wilson is a musical genius, and how "Pet Sounds" is one of the greatest albums of all time and Rolling stone will back you up on that - their lyrics are maudlin at best and lame at worst ("Be True To Your School"?), their production was a soulless retreading of territory Phil Spector had already covered, and their "little surfer boy" act unfortunately distracts people from actual surf bands that didn't sound like an overproduced barber-shop quartet.

Summation of their crimes against music: "Be True To Your School"

The Police
The absolute worst aspects of New Wave rolled into one unbelievably boring band. It's fun to take a genre of music (reggae), drain it of all its originality and relevance, and rework it into your shitty three-piece! And if that wasn't awful enough, "Sting" has to throw in his Tony Montana-accented warbling over it. Oh, and speaking of Gordon Sumner, he wouldn't have ever appeared on TV playing a hurdy-gurdy and being all lame had the Police never existed and become popular. Thanks a fucking lot!

Summation of their crimes against music: "Every Breath You Take"

Dave Matthews Band
Aside from coating people on a Chicago architecture tour boat with their urine and feces, Dave Matthews Band has never done anything interesting enough to warrant the number of followers that they have. The true heirs to Grateful Dead VW van hippie lameness (sorry, Pfish), Dave Matthews music can be heard most days in the acoustic section of Guitar Center, played by some hungover frat boy in a striped polo, artfully ripped-up shorts, sandals, and a baseball cap which covers his rat's nest of unwashed, Natural Light-scented hair.

Summation of their crimes against music: "I Did It"

Smashing Pumpkins/Zwan/Billy Corgan
Smashing Pumpkins might have had competent musicians, but I wouldn't know because I've never been able to get over the crushing pretentiousness of Billy Corgan and his shrill vocals. In the weird musical renaissance that was the early 1990s, Corgan and company got plenty of exposure on MTV by paying homage to century-old French silent movies and riding around in a fucking ice cream truck. They were able to fool people into buying a double album called "Melancholy and the Infinite Sadness," which might be the single most ridiculous title for a record, and then they suddenly found themselves out of vogue. Then Billy decided that because no one was buying their shitty art-rock records anymore, the public didn't deserve to have Smashing Pumpkins to kick around anymore. And had anyone still cared, they would have rejoiced. But Billy Corgan is undead and cannot be killed, so three years later he came back with Zwan. No one cared, and Billy killed them. Then he came out with solo material. All five of his fans bought into it! Now he has supposedly reformed the Smashing Pumpkins, and no one really cares.

Summation of their crimes against music: their mere existence

118. Fenris, I'm in complete agreement with everything in your posting...
I live in Athens GA so obviously I am surrounded by lots of Brian Wilson worshippers. My reply to them is always "Y'know, Brian Wilson has always come off more retarded than crazy"

Smashing Pumpkins
Remember how Corgan always justified playing all of the guitar and bass parts because he wanted "the records to sound as good as possible"? Bullshit. If he were truly concerned about the quality of the sound, he would have hired a singer. He sounds like a gnat perched on top of a cathedral.

I can't argue with any band he listed in the post. I had no idea anyone hated the Smashing Pumpkins as much as I did. Or Dave Matthews.

The Police are musical anesthesia. Emphasis on the anesthesia.

And I am one southern CA native who never bought into the Beach Boys mythos.

136. I disagree on the Beach Boys
"Pet Sounds" may very well be an overrated album (it's hard for an album considered by many to be the greatest album of all time to *not* be overrated to some degree) but the band itself is hardly overrated- they're underrated, if anything. The average Beach Boys-hater seems to focus on their early surf songs that have gotten overexposed by oldies radio and Sonic commercials, and decide that those singles are a fair way to gauge the value of the group.

Anyone who thinks the Beach Boys suck needs to check into some of the stuff they put out after "Pet Sounds" and through the mid-seventies; there is a lot of awesome stuff that they released then that hasn't been overexposed by radio. Additionally, they recorded a number of excellent tracks in the early part of their career that weren't hit singles, either. (Their earlier albums are spottier, though; of course, that is true of the albums of most artists recording in the early sixties when albums were still more often vehicles to promote a hit singles than major artistic statement filled completely with four-star tracks.)

I might have agreed, even though I've always liked the group, with those who call them overrated, if I hadn't dug deeper into their material that hasn't gotten so much airplay. (I don't like "Be True to Your School" either and can take or leave most of their "car" songs as well, but there's so much more to the group beyond that.)

174. It's hard for me to see the Doors as overrated
I like them a lot, but the "cool kids" have been hating on them for years. Any group that the revisionist modern-day critics think it's cool to put on "worst ever" lists despite how ridiculous it makes them come across- it's hard for me to think of as "overrated."

175. I can see that when _Ten_ was at its peak, but
I don't really think of them being overrated anymore, and I don't think they've been for quite a while. No Code, Yield, and Riot Act are great albums that didn't get excessive radio airplay and didn't sell in nearly the mega-platinum levels of their first three, and they're some of my favorite albums of the last decade. Their last release actually got a little better of reviews than I thought it deserved, but that's the exception to the rule, since the case was the opposite with the four albums that preceded it. (I think the critics have just been wanting them to release Ten pt. II for fifteen years now and just decided to say they were finally doing it with their last album, since it sounded a slight bit more like their older work that the four that came before it.)

saying u2 is overrated is overrated
no band has mainatained the level of commercial and crical acclaim for as long, while keeping the same 4 members
by this point in their career, the stones were putting out crap like voodoo lounge. the beatles were long gone. pink floyd had changed lineup's and was mire in the gikmore years and the dead were on autopilot
for u2 to last as long as they have and maintain contemporary cultural relevance is no small feat
and when they get back with brian eno on the next album, i think they'll win a lot of people back who might have been put off by the last 2 "soft" albums
