I just woke from a nap to see the Scripps-Howard spelling bee.
Some girl just got tossed for misspelling a word that was pronounced "gro - nyar" but spelled as I have it in my header.
In what US state - or even UK nation - would that word be part of the English language and use the original French pronunciation (silent d)? For that matter, I can't think of many instances where the French "gn" made it over here, unscathed. Cognac. That's the only thing that comes to mind, off the top of my head.
(Don't talk to me about the Colbert Report - okay?)

5. I'm sure the french speaking people of the region do. |
|
But it's not a word that I have heard used in casual conversation.
But, having taken french in school, I would say it with a silent "d" if I were reading it.

6. Yeah ... I Think She Was Robbed, Though |
|
I did some more digging. They gave her an alternate definition, related to computer gamers.
So I looked in on that, and found a page saying that in game parlance, the "d" is pronounced.
They gave her the word several times, no 'd' was heard from them. Wicked.

It wouldn't be the first time someone got screwed on a pronunciation.

16. I was in the final two of the Arkansas state spelling bee |
|
in 1992, and got tossed out on the word daguerreotype. Instead of pronouncing it duh-gair''-uh-tahyp'(primary accent on syll. 2 and secondary accent on syll. 4) they gave no accent at all to the final syllable, making it sound like duh-gair'-uh-tuhp.
I completely blew the word. Mostly my fault, but that's all I have to contribute to this thread!!!

It's a relatively commonly used word in gaming circles, referring to older gamers. I've always, always heard it pronounced Grog-nard.
She got jobbed. :grr:

21. "old or veteran soldier". These days,... |
|
French word for "old or veteran soldier". These days, the only context I hear it in is to describe wargamers (board games/simulations usually dealing with WWII). As a matter of fact, I thinks grognards.com or grognard.com is one of the portal sites for WWII board game aficionados (such as myself if you couldn't tell by now...)
