David Hyde Pierce Officially Comes Out
I was always on the fence about whether he was gay or not, I always thought he was kinda cute in a nerdy way.

Hyde Pierce Officially Comes Out

Former Frasier star David Hyde Pierce has revealed he is gay, after keeping his sexuality secret for decades. The actor, who played Dr. Niles Crane in the long-running sitcom, has always refused to talk about his personal life, despite rumos about his sexual orientation. But the 48-year-old has allowed his long-term partner Brian Hargrove's name to be mentioned in an interview on CNN.com. In a paragraph carefully buried in the article, the journalist writes, "Pierce got to Los Angeles in the early 1990s when his partner, actor-writer-producer Brian Hargrove, wanted to write for television." Pierce's spokesperson has since confirmed Hargrove is the star's partner.

2. It's a shame he couldn't have done it a few weeks earlier...
just to piss off Jerry Falwell!

Good on him.

He's always been one of those actors where I wound up liking every part he's played.

3. It never occurred to me that he might not be gay!
I kind of thought that issue had been settled...

(puffs out chest) I saw him on stage in Spamalot! And besides, who else could have played the role of Niles, which is basically to out-Frasier Frasier?

4. Yes but he played straight on Fraiser
A man can be fussy without being gay

5. Of course. I've had a few "Niles and Daphne" moments myself.
Not only did he (as opposed to Niles) set off my 'dar, I thought I'd read or seen somewhere that he was gay.

36. He barely played straight on Fraiser...
I always thought that was the subtext of that show. It allowed all of the comedic tension between their gruff ex-cop father being made uncomfortable by their refinement (read as gay) without the Frasier and Niles characters "actually being gay"

16. I'm just as suprised - he was in a movie a few years ago that was like a gay St. Elmo's Fire
Mahoney was the father-like figure to a group of 20-30-something gay men. It was HBO a few time and actually cute movie with an interesting cast

http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0222850/

Here's the movie - perhaps it'll be on HBO again soon

23. He also did a guest spot on ER
where he played an elderly drag queen who was dying and there was a whole conflict between his partner and his family...and still I didn't think anything of it...lol

It was a really good performance

25. Actually, it was his partner who was dying and his partner's family...
who wanted to keep the Mahoney character away.

He sang, "You're Nobody 'Til Somebody Loves You" and made me cry.

born in Blackpool, Lancashire, grew up in Manchester.

Moved the US as a young man and joined the Army, where he said he lost his accent. He was an English teacher and editor until middle-age, when he decided to take an acting class.

32. Yes.
4 "Fraser" cast members who were gay...John Mahoney, David Hyde Pierce, Dan Butler and Edward Hibbert. Plus, Joe Queenan, who is a terrific comic novelist, was a writer and later was an Executive Producer.

"Fraser" was a terrific show. It still holds up nicely on reruns. :-)

40. Niles and Marty make the show entirely worth tuning in.
Interestingly, my favorite episode is "Out With Dad" in which Marty pretends to be gay while Frasier entertains a woman he met at the opera.

My experience has been that they'll hump any object they can get their paws around... (I was going to insert a happy-face smiley here, but thought better of it)

33. other cool projects he's been involved in ...
Mike Mignola's "Hellboy" -- he provided the voice for Abe Sapien (who was portrayed onscreen by Doug Jones). David Hyde Pierce declined any official listing in the film's credits, because he wanted Jones to get all the credit for the performance. Plus, he did the voice for "Emperor Zombie" in the animated version of Mignola's "The Amazing Screw-On Head".

David Hyde Pierce is also on the board of the Alzheimer's Association. His father and his maternal grandfather both were afflicted, and he saw the effects on his family first-hand. Recently he hosted a PBS documentary about the illness, and how people are dealing with it.

He also has been a big supporter of Montreal's Comedy Festival. He appeared there when he was just starting out, and continued to help out even after he became a star!
