Locally raised bison for $3.25 a pound.
My deep freezer's stocked to the top, and there are another five pounds of hamburger in my fridge freezer. Half a bison is a huuuuuge amount of meat. The young bull grew up about half an hour to the east of us, and the butcher is about 20 minutes to the southwest of us, and all told, it came to about $3.25 a pound. If this doesn't feed us for a year (along with giving a good bit away to friends and family, I'll be shocked.

I highly recommend saving up and getting it like this: cheaper, local, and better tasting. Bison is way better, too (no chemicals, free-range, higher in iron and protein than beef, and lower in fat than skinless chicken).

Hmm. Maybe it's time for a cookout. :)

2. Holy cow. I mean Holy Buffalo.
I wish that I had a local source for bison. The supermarket stuff is good but much more costly.

3. I know! Ours gets bison from South Dakota and charges too much.
This was much cheaper, and it's good quality. The hamburger last night for spagetti was good. :)

4. that's a good deal
I've tried to go veg because I'm scared of what they feed animals but I miss meat. I should look into something like that around here. Bison is tasty.

7. We used to be vegetarians because of my health issues.
I never stopped craving meat, though, and when my surgery took care of the problem, I was able to go back to meat with no problems. I think some of us are just meant to eat meat, though probably not as much as we tend to.

Here's a good site for locally grown: http://www.sustainabletable.org/

8. We bought from the ranch.
The ranch has more at their store (really good people) as well as bison yarn and other products, and there's another ranch on the other side of town that does, too.

Here's the ranch we bought from:

Here's the other farm I like (really good people, and they're having a bad year with the frost killing the peaches and most apples):

6. Buffalo, The "Wakan Tanka's version of walmart"
the great spirit provided the buffalo to care for several of the people's most basic needs: food, shelter, clothing, tools, medicine.....

The buffalo are like a walking version of walmart for some people. I am glad that they are seeing a resurgence.

10. They are truly an amazing animal.
There's also a new movement amongst spinners and knitters to spin up and knit their underdown that falls out during spring shed.

11. I have some in my freezer as well.
Good stuff.

I have family who raise bison & cattle nearby. When it's time to butcher I pay the processing fee in exchange for a quarter or a split-side. I like knowing exactly where my meat came from & how it was raised.

13. Yup. Lower in cholesterol and bad fats.
All around, a much better meat, and they use less feed (some finish them off with wheat grain feed, but they're fine with grass), even in the winter.

14. I rarely eat red meat, but when I do it's only bison
There's a bison shop nearby that sells ground bison for about the same price per lb as the grocery stores charge for extra lean ground beef. (many of the grocery stores carry bison here, too)

Even beyond the health benefits, bison is so much tastier than beef.

Congrats on your great deal! :toast:
