Due to an inner ear imbalance, bicycle riding is difficult.
Edited on Sat Jun-02-07 02:48 PM by HypnoToad
After 2 blocks, I end up falling over.

I had 'awkwardness' problems during childhood, but it wasn't as bad as it is today. I even biked to a job 4.2 miles away...

But I wouldn't mind biking to a store that's 2.4 miles away and back again.

Or even getting a lighter car with higher MPG.

I recently noticed the local bike shop closed their business. :( So I can't ask them directly. A great pity... but I know of one some 20 miles away...

Is it possible to re-learn "balance", for a manual-powered three wheeled vehicle with a containment vessel or am I toast?

1. You could

look into buying a trike. They make three-wheeled bikes for adults. It would solve the problem of having to stay balanced on a bicycle. Plus, most of the ones I've seen have nifty basket-type storage areas between the two back wheels.

I'll go see if I can find a pic. brb

6. You're welcome.
:hi:

I'd check for one with multiple gears/speeds - I can't tell from the pic I posted whether that one does or not. t's good to be able to go to an easier ear when trying to ride uphill.

Happy shopping

8. I would
have to do that on a downhill - I don't ride fast enough otherwise to get that much centrifugal(?) force going that I could get the third wheel off the ground...

:P

3. How did you come by your inner ear imbalance?
I had a bout of labyrinthitis in February, and I haven't been right since. Every so often I get the feeling I have marshmallow feet, or like my head is floating and bobbing around, very disconcerting. I didn't even consider I might not be able to ride a bicycle again. poo to that.

7. I had that too...
Numerous childhood (and the occasional adulthood) ear infections did a lot, but one trait of Aspies is being somewhat clumsy...

9. I came back from a bike ride once
and was so dizzy that i could hardly walk, i thought i was having a stroke (i'm a bit of a hypo) and i sat down, then decided it would be a good idea to DRIVE myself :P to the university clinic ( I was still in college) and I had an inner ear infection, they hosed me out with a waterpick, gave me decongestants and antibiotics and i was fine

I have some balance probs at times

10. that sucks
I've had no ear problems until I got this ear infection and it has been no fun at all, it's taken three weeks to go away...I can sympathize in that respect.

11. I have something like that.
It was a birth defect. My balance is terrible - I never managed to learn to ride a bike or rollerskate or anything like that. And I can't walk a straight line even sober.

Other than that, it's not been a major handicap. I even have really good hearing.

15. Look into a recumbent ...
... I can't ride a 2-wheeler either. Never learned when I was a kid and at 40, my sense of balance is for shit. I tore my leg up something awful trying to learn on a 2 wheeler last summer.
But a recumbent "3 wheeler" is a different story.
