Don't let your cats leap off the fridge. |
|
Edited on Sat Jun-02-07 04:04 PM by spinbaby
Don't believe what they say about cats always landing on their feet. One of our managed to land on his face and split open his chin in a rather spectacular and bloody way. A visit to the emergency vet, plus X-rays to ensure his jaw wasn't broken, plus some fancy stitchery under general anesthesia, plus antibiotics, plus pain medication cost us $395. A bargain, really, when you consider what the equivalent emergency visit for a human would cost.
Edit, spelling.

1. I had a dear cat die falling off the fridge. |
|
She was up on the fridge, my son opened the freezer door, she was spooked, and fell off balance. It was just horrifying. This was about 10 years ago and still when I think of it I can get physically ill.

It freaked us all out. My son felt so guilty. It was all we could do to console him. In fact, my husband told him that the cat must have had a stroke or heart attack so as to take the burden off his shoulders. The fact is -- it could have happened to any of us. The cat loved to hang out up there.

7. I can see how that could happen |
|
You always assume cats will land well. Unfortunately, it doesn't always work that way.

16. I think she was startled |
|
and there just wasn't enough room and time for her to adjust during the fall. She landed on her head, convulsed, and died. :-(

5. Should have taken him off the fridge when I saw him up there |
|
He leaped up there neatly in one bound and splattered when he came down.

6. Ours jumped off our third floor deck. |
|
Apparently he saw a bumblebee and felt he needed to get it. We found him 11 days later, and he had nary a scratch on him.
Go figure.
Needless to say, he lost his deck privileges.

One of mine climbs to the top of my entertainment center which as tall as a fridge. She gets down by leaping off the top onto the curtains and kind of backs down the curtains. Scares me to death.:scared:

My roomie's cat once tried to jump on the fridge. It is his stepping stone to the tops of the kitchen cabinets, where he likes to watch us.
Anyway, he jumped up on the island, wiggled his butt, and jumped up for the top of the fridge.
But...
He was launching from on top of some papers.
The papers shifted during launch, he lost most of his power, and slammed face-first into the freezer door! Then straight down, ripping off magnets as he went, until he hit the floor, got up, and hid behind the recliner, grooming himself and working off the embarassment.
I about fell off of my stool laughing.
Of course, that was because his pride was hurt mor than is face.
And while I was typing this, my own cat emerged from underneath the bed and is currently purring on my wrists while I type...

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=u-SMbblxhpMIt is a toss up between the cats dexterity and the person working the camera. Both are amazing.

17. Vet says he'll be fine |
|
It was more scary and bloody than dangerous. No breaks, no missing teeth. Kitty's going to spend some time in isolation resting up in the spare bedroom.

our goofy cat decided he wanted to jump up on the kitchen counter, its white ceramic tile. My SO had left cleaning solution on it and Kittybill didn't know that. So he jumps from one counter to the next and sure enough, he slid right off. He left some pretty funny slide marks on the counter and he knocked over my ceramic painting and broke it. Fortunately he was ok and he doesn't jump on the counter anymore.

19. My cat fell off our deck today |
|
Approximately 20 feet onto a pretty unforgiving hillside. He was being silly, flopped on his back, clawing at the railing post when he shoved against it and pushed himself right off. I saw his eyes pop open like Wile E. Coyote's as he seemed to hesitate in the air before plunging down.
So I leaped to my feet and looked down in time to see him marching up the hill, looking extremely embarassed, nothing hurt but his dignity, luckily. This is the third time (that we know of) that he's fallen off the deck.
His name is Oops - now you know why. :eyes:
I'm glad your kitty didn't hurt himself more than he did. I don't know how Oops does it but I'm going to die of a heart attack one of these times.

That might be the greatest cat name ever! My guys do that with my bed they roll off it but thats harmless since its a very short drop even if they kind of bonk their heads sometimes. Its funny watching them hurriedly start licking themselves off to cover the embarrassment. Glad your kitty is okay. Sounds like a real character!:)

I hope he'll heal all up real fast :cathug: One of our cats jumps down from up there all the time and I'm amazed the force doesn't snap her little legs or break her cat wrists. I should find a way to stop her from it.

23. I'm sorry about your furbaby. |

Mine can be a dare devil. He's fallen off his own climbing tree more times than I can count. He launches himself so fast he loses his footing near the top, and falls.
I hope your kitty heals fast and learns from his antics.
:hug:for you. for kitty.
