OMG! A Hummer...

I live on a snowy packed mountain road. Most of the time you need a 4WD to get up and down safely. Lots of Pickups and Jeeps around here, and they're always caked with mud and dirt and in the winter the salt residue is so thick you can rarely discern the true color of the vehicles. But just now, a brand new Hummer drove by, it's bright yellow color mocking the thick morning fog!

No, please God, not on my road! My mornng is ruined, my eyes tainted. :mad:

2. It gets worse

Just yesterday I saw... a stretch Hummer! A 25 foot long white limo with the unmistakable squashed-school-bus body lines of the Hummer, pulled over on a shopping street in my increasingly alienating home town.

Loads of stretched Hummers around here. Really big with the prom
types, and have taken over from the stretched Navigators.

I'm not sure if the limo companies are actually making money with them, but they do advertise them like crazy.

Also seen a stetched 'Vette and a New Beetle. Are we becoming California?

13. I talked to a limo driver recently about the stretch SUVs

I was in a wedding party, and there was one too few seats in thew limo, so I volunteered to ride up front with the driver. We had a great conversation on the way to the reception hall. I asked him about the stretch SUVs, which, whenver we see them in Manhattan, my wife and I say "Oh, there goes P Diddy!"

In any case, the driver hated them, and not only because of their difficulty in driving. he said that they reduced the class and charm of the limo ride - he took it as an affront to the profession. It was really curious to me, since I figured a stretch is a stretch is a stretch.

"I'm not a fucking bus driver," he said - to my great amusement!

3. This time last year

we had a big (for here) surprise snowstorm that had traffic snarled for hours. A number of cars had to be abandoned along the interstate. One of the abandoned cars was a Hummer. This was shown on TV and we had a good laugh that the Hummer couldn't get through it either.

4. I'm suprised that I haven't seen more

The nearest Hummer dealership to me is leasing them for $650 per month, pricy but not outrageous considering payments on other new cars.

5. I see upwards of a dozen or so a day go past my home

To clarify why I see so many; I live on a farm near Ft. Knox, KY. The ones I see have either OD or camoflage paint jobs and are driven by GI's. They use the roads around here for the city boys and girls to learn to read maps and navigate rural areas. i don't mind seeing them a bit.

As for civilians driving hummers; if one has a need for them I have no problem - but very few of us have large ranches in remote areas that can justify the expense. Usually a good 4WD pickup is sufficient. OTOH, I drive an Escalade for both comfort and convenience. I travel a great deal and have some back and leg problems. When I have room to stretch my legs the knees don't hurt so badly. The heated seat is a huge plus for my lower back. The larger engine allows my to pull my travel trailer without problems. Used to drive a Caravan, but it doesn't have enough engine and transmission for the trailer. I got tired of replacing/rebuilding endines and transmissions every 50,000 miles or so.

Yes, I'm retired. No, I'm not a snowbird. No, I don't get out and about at rush hour when I'm traveling. working folks ned the roadways at rush hour. I have all day to do things. (It's a little courtesy I learned while living and working in Phoenix. From November until March the streets and freeways in the Phoenix area become parking lots - mostly because of inconsidetate retirees the "must" travel between 7-9 Am or 4-6 PM.)

To drive a huge vehicle for no other reason than to show off is silly, to say the least.

8. No flaming from me

I own a SUV, a Grand Cherokee. It's perfect for my needs in the country. One of the reasons why the average American hates liberals is that we get all high and mighty, telling everyone what they should or shouldn't do. There are a lot of Americans who drive SUVs who probably don't need them, but what gives me the right to judge which people do or don't need them? The best way to handle the SUV gas/guzzling problem is pressure congress to pass legislation to force the auto industry to make SUVs more fuel efficient, and publicize the harm SUVs do to the environment and to other drivers in an accident and let Americans decide how badly they need an SUV. I know I agonized over the decision to buy the Jeep.

10. I miss my jeep

I got my Jeep Grand cherokee used. I am not retired, but I live out of town and it got me thru some pretty nasty roads trying to get to work in the winter. When it finally bit the dust, I had to get a smaller, cheaper vehicle. I like my car, but I still miss my Jeep. I don't judge folks by what they drive. We all have our own reasons for driving whatever we choose to drive.

12. I talked a local guy out of buying one

...when I was waiting tables, he was test-driving a yellow H2 and brought it to the restaurant. He asked what I thought (we're friendly), and I told him it reminded me of a VW "Thing".

He passed on it, blaming me for ruining it for him. :)
