I just informed my roommate about macaca and George Allen

He was totally clueless about the whole flap, so I found Macaca Man on youtube and played the clip for him. His comment? "He's an arrogant fuck, isn't he?"

Then I told him that 'macaca' was the Tunisian equivilent of "ni**er", and he almost fell on the floor laughing.

THEN I read select parts of the Wikipedia article on the subject to him. About how 'macaca' was explained away as Allen mangling "Mohawk", then how really it was a cross between "Mohawk" and "caca" to mean 'shithead'. He astutely noted that when your COVER story is that Allen was calling him a 'shithead'... it's bad, it's bad indeed.

THEN I informed him that a 'macaca' was a species of African monkey and the word was being used in reference to Africans. Connect the dots he did, he did.

THEN I read to him about Allen's obsession with the Confederate naval jack.

Finally, I read to him the allegations that Allen's sister wrote about in her book.

He couldn't believe that Jim Webb won by the slim margin that he did, especially considering that Webb was Saint Reagan's Secretary of the Navy!

He also couldn't believe that Allen had been a serious presidental contender before the incident.

Ah, it was good fun all around.

I didn't get to tell him that Shrub's granddad was a Nazi financier during WW2, though. Oh, well, next time.

(me) who went to high school with George Allen and that he was spraypainting racist graffiti on the walls of the school and driving around with a baseball bat in his car inscripted with the phrase "n_____knocker" as far back as 1970. He's been a racist asshole for decades, but it took his unscripted "macaca" moment to do him in politically.
