"Battlestar" finale in works for a while

The executive producers of Sci Fi Channel's "Battlestar Galactica," which will kick off its fourth and final season next year, said plans for the show's demise have been in the works for more than a year.

Ronald D. Moore said he and David Eick started thinking about the show's end midway through the second season but that the idea really gained traction somewhere in the middle of Season 3, when the characters reached the algae planet and got a clue to finding Earth.

"We thought, if we don't start paying this off and really revealing those secrets, we'll be moving in the wrong direction and get to a place where it felt like we were jerking off the audience," Moore said during a conference call with reporters Friday, a day after they announced the hit show would end.

Sigh. I guess I can respect that. :shrug: But I sure will miss it!

1. Better to go out on top

but yeah, I'm going to miss it too. I have heard, however, that they're planning a prequel. Don't know if it will be the same characters so maybe not as good but I'd really like to see more of a back story about life on Caprica before the attack, or the story of the first Cylons and the first rebellion, etc. If Moore writes it I feel pretty confident that, while not the same, it could still be pretty good.

5. I think I like this new trend of series with set end-points, actually

A big F.U. to the networks and the advertisers who milk a show for all it's worth, quality be damned in favor of the almighty dollar. I was amused that Lost's end date was set at 20-friggin'-10, but I was glad they set a date all the same. Perhaps now more shows will do this as well. Heck, it happens in Britain all the time--two seasons plus a Christmas special and The Office was over with--left us wanting more, but damn was it tight.

6. Way back when

I think they used to do that here in the US, too. Maybe not with sitcoms, but I think they would have serials that were on for a set period of time.

The set period of time shows are still pretty common in China, according to my wife. They would have an extended series on every night of the week (Monday-Friday) for an hour and that would go on for 8, 10 or more weeks until the series was over (so, a good 40-50 hours or more of programming). Then, a whole new series would start that was likely completely unrelated to what just ended.

8. Sorry to see it go

But a good idea. I'm watching the first season of McLeod's Daughters on DVD. Someone posted the seventh season on YouTube, so I took a peek. Flat. It lost all the original life and energy.

Now the Battlestar Galactica writers can finish up Firefly properly with a couple more seasons (hint, hint).
