Egads...what is this? Am I actually feeling some respect...for Paris Hilton???
Edited on Mon Jun-04-07 10:16 AM by WilliamPitt
I knew it was a bad idea. MSNBC.com has a link near the top of the page, the report about Hilton going to jail, right? I passed it by a bunch of times, but like the spineless jellyfish I am, I finally broke down and clicked the damn thing.

And I read this:

“I did have a choice to go to a pay jail,” Hilton said Sunday, without giving details. “But I declined because I feel like the media portrays me in a way that I’m not and that’s why I wanted to go to county, to show that I can do it and I’m going to be treated like everyone else. I’m going to do the time, I’m going to do it the right way.”

And now, all of a sudden and for the first time, I have this wee little bitty molecule of respect for this loathesome person. It isn't even a molecule, really, more like a quark or a neutrino or a superstring. Modern science has not yet established technology with the ability to prove it actually exists. It's only a theory, dammit, a friggin' math equation, that's all!

*twitch*

I can't help it. Pretty much all my life, I've been the place where simpering pop-culture dreck goes to die - not deliberately or as part of some moral code, but just because I've never given a single damn about celebrity culture - and Paris Hilton is the be-all-end-all of pop-culture dreck. She's a black hole where no substance survives, whose fame was created not by talent or hard work or any serious endeavor. She's famous because she's blonde and leggy and loaded...oh yeah, and because she got caught knocking boots on an internet video that has now been seen more times by more people than Star Wars. She is the distilled essence of the New American Dumb that passes for culture these days, bereft of any redeeming qualities whatsoever.

But now there's this quark, because she could have gone to a "pay jail" (whatever the bloody hell that is), she could have bought the jail, but has chosen instead to sit in a tiny box with bars on the windows and a rancid toilet in the corner, just like any other mortal who screws up while the court still has something to say about your freedom and the definition of acceptable behavior.

Yeah, it's bullshit, and she's bullshit, and I know. But choosing to do something the hard way is a redeeming quality, now it's her one redeeming quality, and I'm stuck with this bitty dot of respect for her.

Kill me now.

8. Three weeks.
Hilton turned herself in at the Men’s Central Jail in downtown Los Angeles just after 10:30 p.m., then was escorted to the all women’s facility in Lynwood, where she was booked, fingerprinted, photographed, medically screened and issued an orange top and pants, Whitmore said.

After checking in, Hilton was given her first meal: cereal, bread and juice.

The “Simple Life” star will be housed in the “special needs” unit of the 13-year-old jail, separate from most of its 2,200 inmates. The unit contains 12 two-person cells reserved for police officers, public officials, celebrities and other high-profile inmates. Hilton’s cell has two bunks, a table, a sink, a toilet and a small window. She does not have a cellmate.

Like other inmates in that unit, Hilton will take her meals in her cell and will be allowed outside the 12-by-8-foot space for at least an hour each day to shower, watch TV in the day room, participate in outdoor recreation or talk on the telephone. No cell phones or BlackBerrys are permitted in the facility, even for visitors.

That said, she is willing to do her time, and pay the price for her crime. That should be indicative of something.

but not pay jails.

I guess it's the logical extension of a justice system that already discriminates on the basis of class and wealth.

Funny. In the Times article one of the inmates of these types of jails refers to it as a "five-star Hilton".

20. I agree with you.
She may be partly motivated by PR but for a girl of her social stratus, who can in effect get away with whatever she gets away with and be none the worse for it, she did have a choice and she made the right one. I imagine being in her situation and I'd take the "pay jail" in two seconds. She isn't doing that so I'm going to give her the benefit of the doubt.

21. No respect needed. SHE'S LYING
The judge specifically excluded her from alternative jails when he sentenced her. She's just engaging in spin.

Believe me, if she'd had the choice, she wouldn't be choosing the cell she's in. That choice was made for her.

25. What, ON EARTH, does this *could this* have to do with the New York Yankees!?!?!??!
I mean my god man they are only 10 games out of first place!! Don't you have any idea what has been going on there?!?!?! I am sure that you didn't miss them on primetime national TV last night against the Red Sox but if you did by some chance rest assured that they will be back on primetime national TV TONIGHT against the White Sox.

Go.com (ABC) second headline today is about how the Yankees could get out of the Roger deal but aren't

At the beginning of May even though they had lost 7 in a row in April and were ___ under .500 there was a -swear to god- article on MSN "Is A-Rod now Mr.April?" as if you WANT to be "Mr.April" ...you WANT TO BE MR. OCTOBER :eyes: not some early season stat stuffer on a losing team

Anyway....

32. pay jail explained
Some California jurisdictions offer the choice to pay for less third-world accommodations while serving time on minor charges and in some cases to do a work-release type thing where one is checked out for the day to work and then serves their time on nights and weekends.

Her choice was in doing criminal acts. That's why she went to jail.

In theory, anyway...

This is her latest example of being a bad actress.

What was this other special option, and how come she got 22 instead of 45 days?

Yeah, she's dumb and materialistic. But if i were ridiculously wealthy, and at least fairly attractive, I'd probably party all the damn time too. 36. I don't hate her. Although I'm not sure I term her vaious activities "work"
She does get up and go to jobs - filming TV shows, etc., which is more than a lot of the celebutantes do.

Although Susan MacDougall, Martha Stewart, and Paris Hilton all went to jail for different things, I have to say, at least they WENT. There are plenty of white collar male criminals who never go at all. These three women all actually went and served time (granted, Paris isn't going for LONG, but 23 days in prison is still not fun).

I saw some interview (Today Show, maybe?) that said she was due on Tuesday, but if she wanted to make the deadlines for all the celebrity mags, she would show up on Monday. When did she show up?

43. Well, I'm not one to really bash Paris
Edited on Tue Jun-05-07 04:32 PM by Downtown Hound
My experience with the few famous people I've met shows me that they're often nothing like how the media or public likes to think of them, so generally I don't make judgments about famous people unless I know them personally or they do something so atrocious that it's hard to defend them. Paris is a party girl that made a mistake that a lot of young people make, so I don't fault her too much for it. Yeah, she's shallow and materialistic, but not an evil person. And I think that the bimbo she plays is almost entirely an act. I actually think Paris is probably pretty smart. She figured out a way to use her fame so that she can make millions of dollars often by simply showing up at a certain place. She knows how to work it, and while that's maybe not as noble as helping the poor, fighting crime, or protecting the environment, it's not exactly evil either.

As for avoiding pay jail, it seems to me that the main reason to go to a pay jail would be to be spared the hardened and sometimes violent population that you might find in county. Paris is going to be in lockdown, so she would have been spared that anyway. So I think that this is mostly a PR move on her part, but a good one. So I guess you could say I have a little bit of respect for her. After all she is going to be locked down 23 hours a day now, and that wouldn't have happened in the pay jail.
