Grandma Killed By Mr. Softee Truck While Walking To Church
<snip>

A beloved Brooklyn grandmother who rarely left her home except to worship was struck and killed by a Mister Softee truck as she walked to church, police and relatives said yesterday.

Adelaide Rodriguez, 68, was a block from Caminando con Jesus (Walking with Jesus) Pentecostal church in Bushwick on Saturday when the ice-cream truck plowed into her, police said.

She'd left her first-floor flat on Irving Ave. only moments before the 8p.m. crash, relatives said.

"She never went anywhere except for church," said her 31-year-old goddaughter, Maria Rodriguez.

Witnesses told Maria Rodriguez that the driver may have swerved to avoid a boy on a skateboard as he turned left onto Irving Ave. from Woodbine St.

Cops could not confirm that explanation.

The 41-year-old male driver, whose name was not released by police, remained at the scene and passed a Breathalyzer test, cops said.

He was not charged with a crime, but police did issue summonses for equipment violations and failing to yield to a pedestrian.

Rodriguez was pronounced dead on arrival at Wyckoff Heights Medical Center, police said.

9. New York has banned ice cream trucks from playing music
I remember the sound of the Mister Softee truck coming around 3:30 in the afternoon in the summer. Now the trucks are prohibited from playing their music. I wonder if Mrs. Rodriguez would have survived had she heard the music and knew the truck was heading toward her.

11. What?!
That's the whole fun of the ice cream truck. Listening for the music. Hearing it far away on another street, then listening has it gets closer.

What's the fun of having an ice cream truck if you can't play repetative music-box ditties that will get stuck in the heads of all who hear.
