Here's an incredible story regarding aging and exercise:
We met the most amazing couple this past weekend who were also cycling in the full double metric century ride we just did on Saturday. Mind you, this was a 125 mile route, with 8,000+ ft of climbing.

I figured the woman to be in her early 50's and the man to be in his 60's. We kept seeing each other at the rest stops and got to chatting and I asked her, point blank, how old she was.

She cheerfully and immediately announced that she was 60 and her hubby was 75!!! :o Whoa.

Oh. My. Gawd. I was completely shocked and deeply impressed. I told her that I bowed to her Greatness.

They're retired and travel all over the place, participating in different events. They compete in triathalons and had even recently qualified in their age group to compete in the upcoming Iron Man Triathalon in Hawaii this summer. Wow. We're talking a 3-4 mile ocean swim, 112 mile bike ride, and running a full marathon, 26.2 miles. :wow:

When I asked her if she'd been doing it all her life, she said she didn't get into any of this stuff until she turned 40!! Absolutely amazing.

I will never forget them and I will hold them up as inspirations of what is possible as we age.
Age is just a number, my friends.

:hi:

1. There's hope for me yet
And I was only considering trying to run a 5K. I can do 3 miles no problem on the treadmill; I also play soccer- I probably run more than 3 miles in a game. But the thought of an Ironman just makes me tired.

2. Me too.
I can't even begin to imagine doing the Iron Man...or ANY triathalon at this point.

I'm just not that motivated.

Good for you, though, alarimer. We do what we can....:hi:

5. They are inspirations of what is possible.
I would love to be able to do even 1/10 of that! :wow:

I'm lucky to walk a couple of miles. Even doing that, I always take enough money to catch the bus home if I can't make it.

7. Whoa! That's great!
Now I have an even better reason to ride my bike (besides the fact that I love bike riding). Thanks, Shine!
