Recommend a CD to any DUer and/or request a recommendation here
I'll start: I recommend Mary Chapin Carpenter's The Calling to bif.

If anyone wants to recommend me one, I love classic rock, power pop, pop/rock, rock, folk, Motown, and singer/songwriter the most.

3. The "new" Elliott Smith set is pretty good
It's called "New Moon", and is a collection of various odds and sods from his Kill Rock Stars days (circa 1997). It's mostly acoustic, but there's a few rockers on it.

Edited on Wed Jun-06-07 01:24 PM by mvd
From 2007 alone:

The Shins - Wincing The Night Away
The Pierces - 13 Tales Of Love And Revenge
Barenaked Ladies - Barenaked Ladies Are Men
Patty Griffin - Children Running Through
Brandi Carlile - The Story
Kate Voegele - Don't Look Away
Alexa Wilkinson - Lullabye Appetite
Sloan - Never Hear The End Of It
Chantal Kreviazuk - Ghost Stories
Tori Amos - American Doll Posse
The Fratellis - Costello Music
Fountains Of Wayne - Traffic & Weather
The Clientele - God Save The Clientele
Laura Veirs - Saltbreakers (it's better than the solid Year Of Meteors)
Adrienne Pierce - Faultline
The Nightwatchman - One Man Revolution
Dean & Britta - Back Numbers
Jesse Malin - Glitter In The Gutter
The Affair - Yes Yes To You
Mary Chapin Carpenter - The Calling
Marianne Keith - Beautiful Distraction
Lynn Carey Saylor - You Like It Clean
John Mellencamp - Freedom's Road
Kristin Hersh - Learn To Sing Like A Star
Bloc Party - Weekend in the City
Wilco - Sky Blue Sky
Fall Out Boy - Infinity On High
Maria Taylor - Lynn Teeter Flower
Jill Cunniff - City Beach
Mary May - Lock The Door
Lesley Wright - Firefly
The Oohlas - Best Stop Pop
Travis - The Boy With No Name
Amy Winehouse - Back To Black (I gave it a B+ because the retro is a bit distracting at times, but it's one that I wouldn't want you to miss)
Avril Lavigne - The Best Damn Thing (mostly to huge Avril fans; it won't convince detractors - but it's fun despite not being her best)

and more..

Newest discovery was Tralala, who released their latest CD in late 2006.

I'd also recommend these 2007 CDs (all the CDs unless noted though) from these artists. Some are upcoming CDs. I haven't bought these yet, but I've loved what I've heard:

Shannon Moore
Abra Moore
Mandy Moore (only new CD Wild Hope gets a high recommendation - the self-titled one is solid, too, though)
Lavender Diamond
Tralala
Tiffany (I only still like Debbie Gibson's Electric Youth, but like all of Tiffany's old stuff. But Tiffany's The Color Of Silence and Just Me are definitely better!)
Gretchen Peters
Ola Podrida
Dirty Martini
Kelly Clarkson (except for her debut CD, which is promising but doesn't show the growth found on her other CDs)
Kim Richey
New Pornographers
Ozma
Suzanne Vega
Kelly Willis
The White Stripes

25. My Niece Loves It
I had a couple of his childrens' CDs and had to share.

Jason from Jason & the Scorchers is doing kids' music, too, now.

I think it's a cool trend and am really happy for Dan - he's doing what he loves on his own terms and it's brought him great success! It's a great 'FU' to the labels who abandoned the musical culture of the 1980s underground.

I really do recommend "Karma Bed" While Brad has the well-deserved reputation as the altcountry "go to guy", his solo record is really top notch psychedelic rock and roll. The guy can do everything :)

26. The Cat Empire - Two Shoes
They're an Aussie band; the album makes for great party music whether or not there's a crowd. Everything from Ska to (upbeat) jazz, to Kurt Weill-inspired stuff.

Speaking of Weill, I'm all over a new Nashville band called Ode Hazelwood. Eastern European folk-ish, with big band era vocals, somewhat existential lyrics.

33. Everyone needs to hear last year's Songs For Sixty Five Roses compilation
It's a collection of covers of songs written by North Carolina musicians performed by other NC musicians.

It's covers the way that covers should be done: completely new songs from existing material. The most striking example is Eric Bachman's very stark version of the shiny happy Let's Active pop song Every Word Means No. It was recorded alone in a hotel on the Outer Banks and you can almost taste the desolation and the loneliness, which make perfect sense if you actually listen to the lyrics.

There are plenty of other gems on it.

It's also a benefit for a very worthy cause. Proceeds go to cystic fibrosis research since the daughter of legendary musician John Plymale was diagnosed with that disease.

Here's a link for more info:
