What was the last place outside the U.S. you went to?
Edited on Tue Jun-05-07 07:37 PM by mvd
For me, it was Montreal, Canada. Canada's the only place I've been to outside the country.

14. I do want to go there!
I am a quarter Italian. My grandfather, who was full Italian, never got to go. So I want to make sure I go before it gets too late. Right now I have a franchise to pay for, though, so I can't go now.

13. That's something I've wanted to do, is take the Al-Can. I've heard
a lot about it, and it sounds too interesting to pass up. They say you need two or three spares, extra gas, and some other things.

26. I don't know how much of it is paved,if any, but I heard it was mainly
gravel and it chewed up tires like nobody's business. Is it still mostly gravel? I bet you can go hundreds of miles without a gas station, also.

30. it's all paved. some of it is pretty bumpy from frost heaves but it's all paved
but you do want to fill up at every opportunity when you get far north

but people do it in RVs all the time and they get crap mileage

130. It is NOT that bad any more.
It is paved for pretty much the whole length, and there are a lot more gas stations along the route than there were a few decades ago. You do have to PLAN your gas station stops, but unless you're driving some gas sucking monster, you don't need to take any gas cans. There's a gas station every 50-100 miles.

With a little luck, I'll be driving up next spring :)

31. Paris.
Where I got my first-ever case of traveler's tummy, even after multiple trips to Europe, Africa, Asia and the Caribbean. So I gave up drinking water for the rest of the trip (spit out water to rinse my mouth after brushing) and stuck to wine and beer. It cleared up in a few days. :)

Also, on the same trip, Luxembourg, where I am related to about half the country, either by blood or marriage.

Sailed down the coast to deliver my friend's boat to La Paz. I sailed down and flew back.

Our plan was to home port the old racing boat in La Paz and fly down for 'long' weekends of fun in the sun during winters. Bummer, the boat was totaled in a hurricane after it was delivered, and I was able to make my getaway trip down there and play with it. I want to go back.

going back again in a few months. I hope to get to see Xi'An this time around.

Last time, visited Beijing, Shanghai, Suzhou, Hangzhou and Nanjing.

Beijing had most of the famous sites - the Great Wall, Forbidden City, Tiannemann Square, the Summer Palace & the Temple of Heaven. Nanjing was probably the most attractive of the cities that I visited.

102. The weird thing was
Every place I went, they had signs in Chinese & English, except one... even in a small town we went to. Granted, a lot of it was "Chinglish" but you could generally get the idea. The only place where I saw no signs or anything in English was in a Chinese Wal-Mart, believe it or not. (and, the Wal-Mart was on the 4th and 5th floors of a high rise, oddly)

When we went, China was NOT a handicapped friendly nation - my wife had to flag down people to help us with our stroller in the Beijing airport, and her family helped us at the train station in Nanjing.

The people were very helpful and nice, though. Our little stroller seemed to have been misplaced on the flight, so my wife went to speak with the people from the airline, while I waited in the middle of the airport with a huge pile of luggage and an 18 month old child. Three women that did not seem associated with the airport or the airlines came up to me and asked, in English, if they could help me.

I did get a lot of looks, though. We went on a tour the first week, and our tour guides were all programmed to called Shanghai an "international" city - yet, I was rare enough as a white guy to turn heads in Shanghai.

111. I was there for a conference so I didn't have much time
but I made it to the Great Wall, Forbidden City and Tienanmen Square. We met with Chinese business executives and education leaders. I found them to be extremely courteous and interested in America. There is a vibrancy to the city which is very impressive. This was 2 years ago and I still communicate with several of the people I met. I would love to spend a lot more time there. Since my trip, I have read a lot more about the country, its history, geography and culture. Net time I will be much better prepared to explore China. I envy you your return, but enjoy.

112. This time
I'm hoping to get to Xi'An, and maybe Guilin. My wife's not too interested in visiting the Shaolin Temple, though.

Shanghai is not really a city for great historical sites, like Beijing. However, there are some amazing skyscrapers there - the Jiang Mao (not sure on my spelling) tower reminds me of the Empire State Building, on steroids.

I'd recommend Nanjing as well - it has the Nanjing Massacre Memorial, and the tomb of Sun Yat-Sen, the man that led the short-lived Chinese republic after the Last Emperor, and a few other sites as well. And, a lot of the main streets are lined by trees, so it's quite attractive.
