you heard of Jews or Christians committing "honor killings?" Or forcing women to wear burquas? We Christians, being human beings, are very far from perfect, meaning very far from what God wants us to be; but we've learned a few things the hard way over the centuries about tolerance and the treatment of women and children. I don't see most followers of Islam as having done the same. I get your point, and even today it has some validity -- but at least we're trying. Our God teaches generosity and tolerance -- we just don't live up to his ideals the way we should.

34. Try reading the Old Testament prophets,

especially Amos and Isaiah. I find it interesting that they spend a great deal more time talking about social justice and how we are to treat one another than about the "morality" issues that so obsess the Christian right these days. And in the Pentateuch, the God who seems to stern and condemning on the surface spends most of his time telling the Israelites how to set up a society where widows, children, and foreigners were to be treated with dignity, and where no one was to be exploited or taken advantage of. That's partly how I came to turn to the left as a Chistian, rather than to the right as so many do.

at least to me. Many denominations have improved a lot in their treatment of women. Intolerance comes from a poor understanding of what Jesus was like. He was a pretty laid back and understanding dude. And fatherhood certainly mellowed God out quite a bit in the new testament.
