Ask a pillpopping boozehound a question...

Big Bob, Barbara Stanwyck and William Holden are my three favorite "classic movie stars"
And all three were conservative republicans.
That fact convinces me there is not always a correlation between talent and political leanings

5. I see William Holden as the perfect example of a male "butterface"
And god DAMN his voiceover was lame in Sunset Blvd. "Coiled like a silver watch spring?" Was Wilder just trying to make him seem like the ultimate hack screenwriter? :D

6. I think that was exactly Wilder's intention...
you know that there are/were a lot of ladies who would take exception with that "butterface" evaluation of Holden :)
Every time that I watch Holden in something, I am just a blown away by how good of an actor he was. Very natural. Even more remarkable when you think that he started in the 30s when that stylized "rat a tat tat" style of delivery held sway

7. Yeah. Based on Double Indemnity he was capable of doing a bit more with the voiceover

Holden held up pretty well against some formidable acting talent in Bridge On the River Kwai, but I haven't really seen enough of the guy to rate him one way or the other. The circumstances of his death still rate among the saddest ways for an actor to go. :(

8. Check out "The Wild Bunch" and "Stalag 17" in particular...
yes, his death was indeed tragic
