"REBUKE your cough!" ...a message from the local Born Again Fringers.
I've had a VICIOUS cold since Sunday. Fortunately I almost fainted on my basement stairs on Tuesday morning, so I called in and made the total 2 day sleep about 30-35 hours. That's what you're supposed to do with a virus, but we don't do because of that "Job" thingy.

Well, I'm at work yesterday and today, running at about 70-80% and continuing to improve, but the cough is still there.

In comes Jolly 'Ol Ms BORNAGIN. Her recommendation for an instant cure? REBUKE the cough. It is a work of the devil, so rebuke it, and ask Jesus to send it back to Hell.

I'm under the weather, and I have to put up with THIS?

1. Did you rebuke her for telling you to rebuke your cough?
 Or maybe she was saying, "repuke".

:hi:

2. Naw.
I was my usual polite. It DID trigger another couple of coughs (well, maybe I helped them along) which caused Jesus' Buddy to beat feet.

How's by you?

3. No rebukers here...
:P :hi: If anyone would tell me to rebuke my cough if I were sick, I'd have to hock a loogie at them... :)

I'm doing fine! Hope you feel better soon.

4. Now Deb is sick.
I made her call in (Contract Nurse so she's pissed she's losing money) but if one day in the sack makes it tolerable, I vote for bed.

5. What the hell is wrong with a society...
...where people won't stay home in bed when they are sick? Are people such martyrs that they think that suffering and spreading germs makes them better professionals than if they stayed home?

7. I think it's less martyrdom and more fear of losing job/pay.

8. That's definitely a big factor.
Still, it think there is almost a sense of indispensibility that some have or a morbid pride in being sick and working anyway. Or else people are afraid of being seen as fakers.

14. If your employers aren't the usual kind, I envy you.
Mine are fairly nice people, but they are ADAMANT about being on the job, and most of my work is last minute stuff. Personally, I could give two shits if ANY of it EVER gets done, and I'm no masochist.

13. Hey, no offense but I don't get sick days.
They actually DOCKED my YEARLY SALARY for that one day, and nice as they are, they made it quite clear that I was missed on the job that day.

Don't know about YOU, but I NEED MY JOB, as does my family.

I don't give a FUCK for martyrdom. I'd just as soon still been in bed this morning as I'm STILL hacking.

21. People do not get enough sick leave
So they don't want to use it on anything minor. Can't say I blame them. There was a thread recently asking about how much vacation time people had and some also mentioned how much sick leave they got. For some it was only a FEW DAYS (like 5 or 6) per year. Ridiculous. Not enough to cover even one serious cold or flu, not to mention anything else.

Companies and corporations are so stingy with their leave policies that, yes, people do come to work sick. They mostly have no choice.

28. assholes
Why should you even need a doctor's note. Most of the time it is not something a doctor can treat anyway, so why incur the expense and have to sit around a waiting from miserable?

Plus, no matter how stupid these people appear it's painful to reveal one's skepticism. For me, anyway.

22. Scream the following, as loud as you can manage:
"Hey! Fuck off, you stupid fucking cough! God dammit, go the fuck away!"

If that isn't a rebuke, I don't know what is.

23. Side note: I am so-o-o-o-o-o-o on your side on this.
I get sick easily and when it happens, I am down for the count. It is not a question of whether or not I should come in. I physically can't. (I have recent found out I probably have an auto immune disorder, but for the last 20 working years I did not know it.) Yes, I have an understanding employer now, but that has not always been the case. I used to catch the same shit you do now. I hate being sick more than anything and have always resented people who were careless with germs. When I was knocked out with a virus or sinus infection (again) I did not telephone to ask for the day off. I called to say I would not be in. People getting sick is a normal part of life. Businesses that can't function with one person out for a few days are being mismanaged. I absolutely point that out to a manager who was angry about something that you cannot control anyway and this was a job where I had set court dates to attend. My unsolicited advice is not to let them put that reponsibility on you. As tight as the labor market is, it is still a pain in the ass to replace a good worker with an unknown and most employers will avoid it if possible.

26. "Rebuke the (whatever)" sounds a lot like "Name it, claim it."
It's this weird kind of thing that lunatic far-right fundys do. You know, if you claim something in the name of God, it'll come true, etc. It's so far-right fringe that even the conservative pastor at my wife's church thinks it's a bad idea.
