And a bonus picture of the red-bellied woodpecker who slammed himself into my livingroom window. This picture was taken about one hour later, before he recovered enough to fly away.

4. He was out for awhile

I put the dogs in their crates in the house to give him quiet. He rolled himself over eventually and took a snooze for a bit. I kept checking on him every 5 mins or so. He finally flew away after I took that picture and it started pouring out.

It was cool to see him up close for so long. He made a full recovery though. He and his mate have been at my bird feeder several times since.

I wonder if birds get sleepy after a concussion, like humans do? Or maybe he had just had a few too many pirecantha berries, and took the opportunity to sleep it off.

8. A bird tried to fly in our (closed) french windows once

Hit the glass at some speed. The poor stupid little bugger had to sit around for a little while before he felt able to fly away again. I would say yes.

9. Ya' know...we had a bird fly down our chimney ...twice!

We can't figure out how they got past the spark arresting screen (this was during the summer, so no fire in the fireplace). They would hit the damper with a big *thud* then flap around. The only way to get 'em out was to wheedle the damper back and forth until they finally fell into the firebox.

Ever seen a soot-covered sparrow careen off your interior walls like a hyped-up cue ball? It ain't pretty...

14. No, they pretty much have to exhaust themselves.

Then you can nab em, wash 'em up a bit, and send them on their way. One lived, the other didn't.

Plays havoc with the interior paint, too.

The concussion makes them sleepy. They need to wait for the swelling to go down before they can fly away. I know this because, of course, I googled it. :)

I can almost hear the conversation: "Where you been...and whats that bump on yer noggin? You been juicin' it up on the pirecantha berries and runnin' into windows again?! How many times I gotta tell ya' not to eat those things and fly? Or were you eyeballin' that "bleached blondie" sparrow that lives in the nest up the street instead of paying attention to where you were going?!!! I swear, you haven't been able to keep your eyes off her since she moved into this neighborhood...!!!"

Since he had a worm in his mouth when he hit, I was making similar stories up in my head. I kept seeing his woman at my feeder on the other side of the house. I was wondering if she was worried about him. LoL.

5. ooh! a red-bellied woodpecker!

we have one that raids the neighbor's feeder every evening. they're great birds to have around, and eat lots of bugs.

The pair I have spend their days between the bird feeder and the shagbark hickory tree where they eat all the bugs from underneath the bark. When the male slammed into the window, he had a worm in his mouth.

15. The garden is growing nicely!

What's that on the right in the foreground? In fact, what is all that stuff?

I spent all yesterday and a few hours today weeding and mulching part of my garden. This year the only vegetables I'm growing are tomatoes and peppers in pots, so all my energies are going into the flower beds. It takes forever but it's so satisfying when everything is weeded and tidied up!

18. Ok counter clockwise from foreground

Spinach, mixed lettuces, peas (growing up the string), in the corner (can't really see) cucumbers, zucchini, more cucumbers, peppers, then tomatoes, more cucumbers. Along the side closest to house are a few sunflowers I transplated that sprouted under birdfeeder.

So far it's been pretty easy to keep weeded. There are some toads in there keeping the bad bugs in check. Can't really see the flowers in that picture but they are all along the outside of the fence. I'm enjoying it.

20. here is my meager garden

not nearly as organized as yours

but, the tomatoes are doing well, I have quite a few jalapena and bell peppers - picked a few of those already, and have already picked 10 or so cucumbers

Also - the flowers are doing real well.

Ours is in the WRONG PLACE this year. My S.O. purchased a 1940 home this winter. we were in a drought when we planted the garden so the area seemed real sunny. We are now 11 inches over the anuual rainfall avg for this year and leaves have the whole back yard shaded.


I have to transplant the tomatoes this weekend, and the rest is pretty much shot. No sun and way too much rain.

Sorry about your garden. I wasn't sure if there was going to be enough sun there, but it seems to be ok. I took that pic mid afternoon and the shadow was just starting to cover the sunflowers and tomatoes. If I had been smart, I would have put them where the lettuce, spinach and peas are. Oh well, I'll know better next time.

34. We are clearing a LOT of shade, but...

it's too late for this year. We will have better luck next season I am sure. The home is close to 70 years old and some of the pecan tree's are easily that old. I was sure looking forward to fresh squash and peppers and such this year... Oh well, better luck next time.
