I'll start: I went to Penn State - University Park campus.

I think that our biggest rival was The University of Pittsburgh (Pitt).

5. Framingham State College. We had no football rivals
The team sucked so bad the last year, they lost every single game, and at the LAST game went up against another team that had also lost every game, and got thrashed by said team 48-0.

ouch.

71. Reminds me of an old MAD bit
A parody of college football movies a la "Knute Rockne — All-American" old and new.

In the "old" version, the coach said, "This is gonna be tough! Look at this schedule! Tech, State, Tech State, State Tech, Tech State Teachers..."

:D

(In the "new" version, it was, "Look at this schedule! We play nothing but set-ups and pushovers! All the better to get the number-one ranking!")

Our biggest rival? Well...Colorado likes to think they are, but the win-loss record is too lopsided (in our favor, of course). Actually, when I was in school, our biggest rivalry was any team from Florida. ;)

45. Actually,
I think if you define "rival" as "team you hate the most" Colorado probably would win, LOL.

Oklahoma is obviously our long-time, old school rival, but now it's more of a respect thing than a hatred thing. And Kansas? They're just annoying, I wouldn't say it's a rivalry, per se.

Ah, the Big 8
Those were the days.

I went to UNL from 1996-2003 (2 degrees, I'm not THAT slow) and during my time there, we managed to play all 3 major Florida teams for the national championship (or did while I was in high school). That's why I mentioned them in my original post.

Colorado still wins for team we hate the most, I think. Just because they're so easy to hate. But IMO, a real rivalry isn't that lopsided. That's why I think I'd have to go with Texas...they remain the team we gear up to beat every year as of late, and though the win-loss record isn't in our favor, it's at least usually a really good game.

The two schools play annually for the Bronze Turkey trophy in November (originally on Thanksgiving). Monmouth leads the series with 56 wins, 50 losses and 10 ties.

I wasn't aware of any rivalry. The lacrosse team (div III when I was there) won something like 11 straight national championships. Now the lacrosse team is div I, but all the other sports are div. III.

Go Camp Ho-Ho!

Edited to add this:

• National Championships: 1972-76-77-80-81-82-83-84-85-86-87-88-89-90-91-93
• Patriot Leauge Titles: 2000, 2002

Panthers. Grrr.

Our rival was Monterey Peninsula College — the Lobos. In the days when there was something called "school spirit" on community college campuses, MPC students would come to Salinas during the week of the Big Game and paint a yellow streak down the back of Beauregard, the granite panther statue in front of the main building.

I don't think anybody's done that since the '60s. :(

I went to the University of Maryland, College Park (go Terps!) and Penn State was annoyingly always beating us in football while I was there. My senior year we actually tied with them and that was a cause for victory. While I was there I think it was Penn State that was the biggest rival (and maybe somewhat University of Virginia a little). These days though..its definitely Duke.....:hi:

The rival is UCLA. I still have no idea how Notre Dame enters the discussion. We play the Bruins in every sport all year long. Notre Dame is one football game.

Regardless, I'm more of a Canes fan than SC fan. It wasn't exactly gambling rooting for USC. But attending every Canes home game for more than a decade when they absolutely sucked was a great investment that paid off. The rival is the Gators, too petrified to play Miami annually for the past 20 years. I mildly dislike the Bruins but the hatred for Florida is limitless.

88. DePauw vs Wabash - oldest continuing football rivalry in the country.
Used to be the oldest "West of the Alleghanies" - but the other rivalry (can't remember what it was) stopped playing within the last 20 years.

When I was in grad school in the SF Bay area... there was an annual party in SF to watch the game - as some channel televises it (? these are really small schools) - and folks watch it. Granted my brother and I are "rivals" - but neither of us pay attention until after the game - for the bragging rights.

The grad school rivalry was more interesting - stanford vs cal ... nerds go nuts. There was the year where the mascots got into a brawl and both ended up with charges filed against them...

90. Kentucky (GO CATS!!!)
And because we DOMINATED the 90's in men's basketball, we have many rivals:

1. dUKe - because we can't ever get over that '92 game when Christian Laettner hit a 3 from no-man's land at the buzzer.
2. Tennessee - Do you know why the UT Vols wear orange? They can wear to the game on Saturday, hunting on Sunday, and picking up trash on the interstate come Monday morning :D
3. Flordia - these days they are the team we love to hate.
4. Indiana - not so much now, but when I was a kid, Bobby Knight was as his worst. The games had to be played in L'ville because the rivalry was so intense, they couldn't play in Indianapolis or Lexington.
5. Louisville - but only since that dirty traitor Rick Pitino became the head coach.

The main rival is UCLA... or FUCLA, as we like to call them. Funny thing, though. Many of the professors teach at both Universities. And in the MA and PhD programs, some students go to one another's campuses to take classes. The rivalry is felt mainly in the undergrad population.

We also have a "hatred" for the Cal bears and Notre Dame... and about anyone else we play against!

Which was true. Anyone who's got serious brain has the possibility of entering either MIT or Harvard--if you're smart enough, they will find you the money to get you in. But to go to USAISD? ago - 1942. Still looks forward to receiving his Penn Stater, but it's bittersweet. Most of the names he remembers turn up in the obit column!

As for me, I went to a run-of-the-mill California State College. I don't know if we had any rivals. I never would have thought of going to a game.

149. Virginia Tech class of 1997

Spent my freshman year at Mississippi State but went back to my home state after a year. They both have vet schools which is what I wanted to do until I realized I'd have to deal with people a lot. I think I'm better off working in a lab, it suits my personality better.

Forgot to say University of Virginia is the biggest rival. My sister went there.

150. California Maritime Academy
Now part of the California State University system.

When I was there we had 250 students (that's two-hundred-and-fifty, no zeroes left out!). When I started it was all men. (the Homecoming Queen thing was kind of weird). After 2 years we started getting female students. 6 in the first group graduation in 1976. One got pregnant and dropped out (actually both protagonists left).

We had intermural football. 8 teams. I was in the First Engineering Division. Our team's name was "the Fighting Artichokes."

I don't know about rivals. We had basketball games against other small colleges in the SF Bay Area. For many years we always won home games. The other teams got the word. "You win, we kill you!" One day we played a new school who did not know the rules. They won, they lived. We never won another game after that.

It was a strange school then. 4 years were crammed into 3. 2 weeks vacation during the summer. As second classman you did 22-1/2 units including physics, calculus and electrical engineering. I had a job offer 6 weeks before graduating (most people did). I graduated on a Saturday and went to work Monday.

I understand the school now has crew and competes against UC Berkeley and others.
