1. YES
she showed those boys just what girls are made of. She beat Curlin the Preakness Winner and the favorite.

It was an amazing race and I was cheering for her before she even walked on the track.

7. A real thrilling finish. My voice is still hoarse. (No pun intended).
It was nice to witness racing history.

<snip> Rags to Riches: The new-comer with a serious threat to win this thing. THE BIG PROBLEM? This is a FILLY. In case you don't know horse racing that is a female horse (Not that there is anything wrong with that.). In a sprint, one could consider. In a mile and a half? One has to seriously consider her chances. Her win in The Kentucky Oaks (the big race the day BEFORE The Kentucky Derby), was impressive, and will spark some interest from bettors. Personally, I'll bet against a filly every day of the week in The Belmont. The Kentucky Oaks was a 1 1/8th mile race. The longest of her career. However, I would definitely include her in exotics, just not to win. <snip>

18. He should be eating some crow ...
And he should've examined her pedigree before 'capping the race. Her half-bro Jazil won the Belmont last year, and her sire A.P. Indy was a Belmont winner. So it was a no-brainer the distance would be to her liking, and she'd already shown some serious speed earlier in the year. Reportedly, she's also a handful in the barn and pretty tough and competitive with the boys when she works with them on the track. ;)

A monumental and glorious win. Also, the first filly to ever win the Belmont at 1 1/2 miles. She's special, to put it mildly, and I was ecstatic to see her win.

19. I don't know where that guy was coming from...
He implies that distance is a factor militating against a female horse, when the opposite is probably true. The greatest "stayer" in the world the last few years was probably Makybe Diva, the mare who won the Melbourne Cup, at a distance of 2 miles, 3 straight years.

10. I'm delighted the filly won but this had to be the slowest Belmont I've
ever seen. Everyone was holding back their horses until the end.

13. Not really, the time was about average.
Edited on Sun Jun-10-07 10:19 AM by pookieblue
Secretariat's (Rags to Riches Great Grandsire and the Triple Crown Winner) had I think was the fastest time at: 2:24.

Most of the times fall like this

2:26 4/5 - in 1978 by Affirmed The last Triple Crown Winner

2:29 3/5 - in 1977 by Seattle Slew a Triple Crown winner and her grand sire.

The longest time was 2:31 in 1941 by Whirlaway the Triple Crown winner that year.

This year's time was 2:28.74.

Of course, it will be kind of hard to beat Secretariat's time. That was one amazing race and one we will probably never see the likes of again. but who knows. I'm sure no one thought another filly would beat a bunch of colts again in the Belmont either.

edited to add, I grew up watching horse racing. I'm not into as much as I used to be. But that being said, I still wish I could have seen the likes of Man o War and Secretariat race.

20. Maybe this will make up for some of my trauma from the 1970s.
Somebody else posted (last year, after Barbaro broke down) that after they saw Ruffian break down in the "Battle of the Sexes", against Foolish Pleasure in 1975, that they were scarred for life, and would never watch another horse race on TV.

So maybe this great filly Rags to Riches :bounce:

will make up for the loss of Ruffian, the racehorse with the BEST record in history.
Ruffian was NEVER beaten, NEVER headed in TEN out of TEN races.

GIRL POWER!!!!
:bounce:

21. Ruffian is buried
in the Belmont infield, covered with blankets the same color as the silks she carried. Rags to Riches passed by the grave on her way to the winning circle. If you compare photos of the two fillies, you'll see that other than coloring (Rags to Riches is a bright chesnut, Ruffian was ebony) they look strikingly similar--same physique, same lovely confirmation. A friend of mind was so struck by the similarity she thought the two must be closely related (they're not).

I must confess, I had Rags as my second-place finisher. I picked Tiago for the win and Curlin for third. While she was the best bred for the distance, I was worried that the field had more depth that she might have been used to in the 2007 distaff division. I've never been so happy to be proved wrong! When she made her move in the stretch I started yelling "Get your nose out girl!" And she made it. Beautiful!

22. I thought it was going to be a race
between her and Curlin. And I was right. in the backstretch it was all about those two. It was a race right down to the wire.

I have to wonder, however, how the race would have turned out, if Street Sense would have ran. Would have been even better if the three of them were running together. With Rags of course crossing the line first. :)

24. Hopefully
Rags will meet Street Sense in the Travers Stakes or another summer race. I applaud Street Sense's people for saying no to the Belmont though. They made the decision that was best for their horse and not their egos.
