Has anyone else ever picked up HAM radio broadcasts on their computer headphones |
|
I am picking something up here and it is freaking me out.
I cannot make out most of the words, but it is a repeating message.

Do you have powered speakers with amplifiers built in? What's happening is that the audio cables you're using to feed your signal to the speakers are acting like antennas. CB is AM, and it takes almost nothing to receive AM if the signal is strong enough. (Especially if the trucker is using an illegal power booster and exceeding the FCC regs for transmit power, which some of them do.)
The best way to prevent this is to use coax or otherwise shielded cables. Go somewhere like Radio Shack or Best Buy and tell someone there about your problem, and they'll sell you an audio cable that costs four times what a simple one costs, but which will prevent this from happening.

I lived her for 5 years and suddenly I was allergic to the great outdoors. I didn't know what was up as I had never had hay-fever before. The really bad thing is nearly everything I like to do is outside! :pals:

It just means you have a bad pair of headphones or something.
I have a cheap little guitar amp that picked up some kind of walkie-talkie, and pretty loudly too.

18. I had that happen a few times. |

Not on headphones, but on my speaker set since the amplifiers are much more high-powered.

When I lived next to Northwestern University I picked up the campus radio station on everything--even a casette player.
At some point something must have changed and because for the last 10-15 years I lived there, it didn't happen anymore.

I keep thinking it's the little christian radio station about 1/4 mile from my house but I can never hear it well enough to figure out what it is.

21. No, but I once picked up a police radio on my tv... |

The officer was radioing his base, to tell them he had just pulled up at -MY- address, and it came through my TV set, drowning out the program I was watching.
It really freaked me out- for a second there, I thought he was on a bullhorn outside, giving me a warning!
But then I realized it was just his high-powered radio 15 feet away, combined with the 25 feet of speaker wire I was using for a TV antenna.
(Turned out he was just dropping off some court papers to my upstairs neighbor, BTW. What a relief!)

But all it does to my computer speakers (Logitech Z-560) is make them buzz really loud when he key's the mic! Now the CB radios do interfear with it in a way where you can barley understand what there talking about, and it only lasts for a quick second.
