I heard them recently on Rock Line. They were saying how this guy confronted them one time about "only playing the hits." He criticized them for not playing some of their lesser known work now days to which they responded, "Everything Lynyrd Skynyrd did was a hit."

13. i'd rather listen to Bill Monroe...
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bill_Monroe why? what are *you* looking for here? i was in the music business and seen allot of mediocre stuff OMG!! don't you dare suggest that Skynard was mediocre perish the thought; the people in the band one thing, the personalities within the people in the band another (who can dislike a bunch of pot smoke'n, Southern Comfort swill'n dudes & their groupies bouncing round the south on tour buses ), the music itself? puh-lease, why no entries for Marshal Tucker? when The Allman Brothers were more correct in terms of musical history therefore i.e. southern rock simply does not boil down to merely Lynard Skynard imo & the opinion of others

Elvis's first B side was a Bill Monroe tune, and it has recently been touted by way of suggestion that he, Elvis, started rock & roll...

sometimes when you feel a powerful hankering for a drink of pure water, you may do better to put your lips beside the alluvial moon pool where some of the purest water is found

16. Hyperbole, Brigit
I was just fooling around. I liked Skynyrd when I was 16. Then I discovered heavy metal and Skynyrd started to sound like a bunch of wimps to me. I still like "The Needle and the Spoon" but most of the time if a Skynyrd tune comes on the radio I turn the channel now. But the standards of the rock-n-roll hall of fame seems to be mostly about the success of the band rather than any real change or contribution they made to music. By those standards Skynyrd should be in.

18. hy·per·bo·le, Droopy...
1. obvious and intentional exaggeration.
2. an extravagant statement or figure of speech not intended to be taken literally, as “to wait an eternity.”

i had thought you were a writer Droopy, so i'm trying to cut you some slack here; but it is my firm opinion even if only mine, that my reply to your seemingly innocuous little suggestion (if of course you're looking for 'true' hyperbole then it shall be thus) is in fact not & by definition "hyperbole", as you've employed the asparagus here, but the truth as i've experienced it sent along with a bit of history ergo very-very near to opinion; you don't much care for the opinions of others? cool...

therefore Skynard is out

They had just a few good songs and really just road those songs, along with the Southern Rock already perfected by The Brothers Allman and CCR, to fame and fortune...

44. Allman Brothers? CCR?
The Allman Brothers didn't perfect Southern rock, and CCR was a California band. The genre of Southern rock that went through Molly Hatchet, 38 Special (both of whom were way overrated), and even Tom Petty came through Skynard, not the Allmans. The Allman Brothers were okay, but their music was too lifeless and flat. Skynard's music has a hymnal quality. Listen to any classic rock station in the South and hear who gets played more. The Allman Brothers, for all their "respect," bored most southerners, and the few southern rock aficionados I know who argued that they were a great band still would crank up Wet Willie CD or even Jimmy Buffet before the Allmans. There are exceptions, of course, but most people I know who listen to the Allman Brothers seem to treat them like medicine--they don't really want to take it, they just feel it's supposed to be good for them.

10. without question. The Allman Brothers paved the way for bands like
Skynyrd, but the group did southern rock music proud. Their unique dual lead guitar sound was a rock music innovation. They are definitely in the upper echelon, and deserve a place in the hall of fame.:toast:

50. I share an experience similar to what you describe.
I used to play in a punk/metal band smack dab in a small town full of right wingers. We never heard the end of "Play some Skynyrd! FREEBIRD!!!!!!" Every single band we opened for played some Skynyrd song and the DJ's always played it several times a night while the bands were getting ready to perform. I grew to hate it as well.

if that institution is indeed all about rock and roll as a populist form and its inductees being influences, Kiss certainly belongs there.

17. Could someone explain why Bobby Keys isn't in as a sideman
I don't know what the criterion is but I can't imagine why he doesn't qualify. His sax added the raunch that turned Exile on Main Street into a masterpiece. He's the best part of Skynyrd's They Call me the Breeze and his work with Zevon is stunning

Color me perplexed

They still are musically dull, lyrically banal and pretentious, and cultural not nearly as influential.

It's an establishment, after all. Rock is supposed to be anti-establishment.

But if you're gonna have one, you gotta have Skynyrd in it. Freebird ALONE demands it.

To me it kills the whole idea of what Rock N Roll was/is to begin with; a reaction against the staid musical climate of the late 40's/early 50's that it was spawned.
