2. I think they both had a significant influence.
I think the Allmans got it started and gave it some respectability, Skynyrd brought it to the masses.

3. Elvis was a Southerner and a rocker
I think he started Southern rock but I guess we could quibble endlessly about genre definitions :)

16. Allman Brothers were vastly more popular in their heydey
I find the current fascination with Skynyrd incomprehensible, as they are inferior in every way to the Allman Brothers. Not even in the same ballpark.

4. Well, I would argue that the Allman Brothers invented it, in the
incarnation that southern rock has become known as.

5. 60's folk
Edited on Sun Jun-10-07 08:41 AM by The_Wizard
Rock/Folk sounds like Crosby, Stills Nash & Young, Creedence Clearwater Revival, Jackson Browne, Joni Mitchell. Plus hard blues rock like The Rolling Stones. The country folksy rock sound helped cross over country, blue rock and rockabilly leading the way for The Allman Bro, The Eagles and the pinnacle Lynyrd Skynyrd. The interesting thing is most of the country/folk singers didn't come from the south.

9. I was thinking Rockabilly when I saw question
without answers. I couldn't think of any of the groups though.

Allman brothers was the last concert I went to. I went all the way up to NJ (from NC) a few years ago to do it. A buddy goes every year and blows out the tailgating etc. A day long extravaganza! Good times.

:hi:

8. Great song, Inchworm! The Allman Brothers own that song!
Every time I am asked to list my most indispensible albums, Fillmore East is ALWAYS at the top of the list. Here's part 1 of Whipping Post from Fillmore East: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wISH-tBgN_g
