Since those jobs are all being offshored, what shall I tell the hot admissions officer I've been talking with?

And more importantly, should I not bother asking her out?

2. Here ad design and journalism are done locally
I would think that it would be most effecient if they were done locally, especially for the smaller publications. I think that there will be ad design jobs in the U.S. in the future.
I don't think that you should ask an admissions officer out until you are admitted and start classes or until you definitely decide not to go there and have waited a couple of months. There should not be any question of whether or not you get admitted based on her opinion of you as a potential partner or whether or not you decide to go there based on that.

7. Yes they do or are currently attempting to do:

http://www.bradlinder.net/2007/05/offshoring-journalism.html

http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/articles/A53035-2004Aug9.html

http://blog.foreignpolicy.com/node/5004

http://www.sajaforum.org/2007/05/outsourcing_new.html

A USC journalism professor called it a "truly sad picture of what American journalism could become." More criticism, from an Indian:

It is a shaky business proposition as well, said Uday Karmarkar, a UCLA professor of technology and strategy who outsources copy editing and graphics work to Indian businesses. If the goal is sophisticated reporting, he said, Macpherson could end up spending more time editing than the labor savings are worth.

I hope that point is correct. At least until enough Indians can be taught English and US culture and put it over their own... :7

Such offshoring can go only so far, but they're trying their best to fuck as many people over, it seems... (I'll redact or retract that statement the moment America's cost of living matches the cost of living of India, which makes the wages they want to pay a godsend to them, while it's not livable for us.)

20. I think the word in your post "all" is not accurate at all
You seem concerned because they have offshored "some" of the jobs that you want or might. That does not mean "all" or even "most"
If you want to study those subject, go for it. Don't assume that you won't be able to get a job just because "some" of the jobs in your field might be given to foreign workers.

3. Is there a job that isn't being offshored?
And I wonder if jobs are really being offshored at the rate they are reputed to be. It seems as if nobody in the States should have a job left by now.

Ad design and journalism. Even dickhead CEOs understand that there's too much of a culture mismatch. I don't think Apple or Microsoft are going Bollywood on TV any time soon.

Oracle might, but that's because they're already 99% Indian.

5. There was a skeptical note in my post
From reading here, one would believe that programmers in the US are all now starving or stacking shelves at Wal-Mart, but I don't believe that is really the case.

9. Also true. I am known for being paranoid and excessively worrying...
Still, I know (used to know) a lot of IT people. While I'm overstating the issue, nobody should be understating it. That's why so many people are out of work.

13. Yes. He found one back in late March/early April.
15% increase in salary, stock options and bonuses. Also it's a job with greater responsibility. He's worked there for almost two months now and enjoys his work. :)

8. I hope so. I honestly hope so.
Of course, both Apple and Microsoft have offshored jobs, therefore what's to say they're not going to try to continue?

What they should do is lower costs - I mean, finding cheaper help should allow them to do that. Funny how it isn't, which was said to be one of the original points to offshoring...

15. Or if I am whining, what does everyone else here know that I don't?
What am I blind to? What am I missing out on?

Why does the explanation of "needing more H1Bs" change so often?

Your thought indicates you know a lot more. Please fill me in or give me a gun so I can end it all and free you, Writer, the Lounge, and everywhere else my naive whines ever again. I've got no place in this world, that much seems obvious. x(

17. Still ad jobs here in LA area

Particularly in the graphic arts area. Son worked for a well know company
for eight years. Recently quit due to the long commute, and had no problems
getting another similar job with comparable salary, benefits, etc. But then, your
area may be different. However, some of the companies do offshore. Good luck.
