I'm caught up through season 6, part 1 and have already heard bits about what's happened these last few episodes... So, since there is no way in hell I'll get through to the point when the DVDs come out without hearing about it, I say SPOIL AWAY!

The end.
This ending was very David Chase, never tying up loose ends. It's disappointing in a way, but very typical for Chase.

It was perfect.
If you watch the scene, watch Tony's eyes, watch your eyes, watch the camera, it was the blending of paranoia this guy feels everyday, except this time YOU expected it to happen.
He expects it to happen every moment of every day.
That was the point.
Nothing happened.
Tony didn't die.
His daughter not parking the car correctly was just there to build anticipation - to make you think something was going to happen...without that it would have been lame.
Its all so simple.
He drew the audience into the show, figurately...made them part of it...made them emphasize.

I have hated all the PC stuff they've had to compromise on over the years, the smoking and whatnot. It seemed to me Chase was setting it up to show us what a bad guy Tony really was, so we'd be glad when he was arrested or killed in the end. I am mostly just SO GLAD that we didn't get that POS ending. This one is just perfect for me. It's life. I really just love it!

Won't give away any info or spoil it for those on the West coast... but the ending is both brilliant and disappointing at the same time. A bit of a cop out, a bit of screenwriting genius.
Can't make up my mind yet, but it was as clever as anticlimactic.

This is THE POINT: It goes on, they are greedy and messed up, it never ends |
|
Edited on Sun Jun-10-07 09:47 PM by Julius Civitatus
What I read from this ending:
- The Sopranos: They really are "made in America", as the title of the episode suggests
- In the end, no matter how much we got to like them, they are greedy, mean-spirited, cruel, and shallow
- Even those developing a heart (A.J.) left their "bleeding heart" causes for a Beemer and a glitzy shot at the glamorous life
- Throw in some money and some comfort, and everyone forgets about the war (the foreign one, and the gang war of the mafia families) and get back to their silly routines (A.J. to watch TV, Carmela to hunt for a mansion, Tony to eat junk food at greasy spoons, etc)
- A.J. and his attitude is a very clever social commentary about what's wrong with America today and our complete numbness to the suffering in the world. Recently, A.J. becomes hyper-sensitive when he experiences real loss in his life, and starts a journey of self-discovery. In the process he becomes obsessed with world affairs and "fixing the world" by even joining the army. All that goes out the window when mom and dad intervene and buy him a BMW and a job in Hollywood. Later we see A.J. watching TV, laughing at Bush and Rove in their recent (and very embarrassing) public attempts to dance. He is numb to politics again. He doesn't care anymore: he has a new girlfriend and a cool job.
- The ironic use of the Journey song (as much as I hate that f#cking song) is the very title and very point of the series, and today's title: Small town boy, small town girl, fighting to make their way in America by any means. Nothing more American than the shallow, greedy gangster. If you grew to love and sympathize with the Sopranos, forget it: they are disgusting. And it never ends, it never changes. Don't stop believing. And it goes on, and on, and on...
Just my 2 cents. Any other ideas? Any suggestions?

Edited on Sun Jun-10-07 10:55 PM by Julius Civitatus
actually, scratch that. Let me rephrase it: After Tony orders the ghastly murder of Phil, the Sopranos go back to normal. It's because their uncaring brutality that the Sopranos can go back to normal without any cares. Not a sign of guilt about Phil's grandkids; not even Carmela.

No matter what gruesome shit occurs, you pick up and go on. Friday, we're watching the Secy of Defense dismiss the Congress, rather GHASTLY - and the country is focused on a driving violation. And then sits down to watch the Sopranos Sunday night. WE are the Sopranos - like it or not.

137. Last weeks episode should have been it. |
|
It was THE episode. Tonights was a joke. David Chase can write all the shit he wants about whats wrong with our culture any other time. But the fans have been loyal to that show for YEARS- even with it's fucked up schedule & sometimes below par episodes. Like Part 1 of Season 8, the whole Vito story. It was AWFUL. Boring as hell.
I never loved the show as much as I did Season 1. Other episodes were great but Season 1 was phenomenal. Without Nancy Marchand, something changed. The acting from the other cast members was superb though, even when the writing was NOT.
When the second half of Season 2 started, I had such high hopes. So many things happened, and it seemed they were building toward a fantastic climax.
I feel robbed.
I think the fans deserved alot better than what we got.

Season 1 was a masterpiece, and the whole mother-son bit was a large piece of its psychological complexity.
It went steadily downhill from there.
I'm actually relieved it's over-- the last few episodes had been such an orgy of grim violence.

I never liked this show very much-characters violent and SO unlikable. YET, after we got HBO I watched the back episodes and caught up-because like a freaking car accident-you CANNOT look away and damn it all you want to know if they live or die...
So..on the one hand it was super lameo-don't stop believing-possibly a giangto clue that Tony was getting whacked-remember the good times, that's what you said, says Tony Jr.-clearly the Tone was coming to an end whether he bit it or was hauled off to jail land....and yet-give us a clue as to the answer-ON the other hand NEVER in four billion years would regular network TV have the balls to do the "FADE TO BLACK, make up your own ending" and thank GOD for that.
I don't like cliches but come on. Give us something more poetic. AND the worse thing was this episode was one of the better ones EVER-political and thoughtful-where many were so violent, racist and misogynist you needed a bath after. BUT that's your ziti folks. Extra cheese.

154. The ending made a very strong point. |
|
It was really very simple; You never know when it's going to end, even when you're expecting it, or think you know what's coming. I won't say it's "brilliant," and last night I was crying "COP OUT!" but on reflecting, it was really rather clever...there we all were, just minding our business, thinking we knew what was up then *BAM* lights out.
What better way to show the end?

|
Would he have shown the shooting of Tony in slow motion, with blood spewing out? Boring and predictable.
Would they have all climbed into a van to drive off to a witness protection program? Boring.
Would they have shown Tony having a massive heart attack and chocking on an onion ring while family gathers around hospital bed? Boring.
No, this was the really the only way to do it.
