15. that would be good anyway
let's see...there is "One of Us" by Joan Osbourne; the rest of the songs on that album were amazing and that song was released as a single and ruined her career

"Pretend We're Dead" byt L7, probably the only 'pop' song they sang, not at all representative of their music but of course was released as a single because it was so 'soft'.

"You Oughta Know" by Alanis Morrisette, not at all representative of the rest of her music but released as a single for God knows what reason...

so strange the way the record companies do this...

he specifically states it's NOT about the Boston strangler types:

Well you heard about the Boston...
It's not one of those
Well, talkin' 'bout the midnight...sh...
The one that closed the bedroom door

I am of the opinion this is one of the greatest rock and roll songs ever written though so I'm a mite prejudiced.

3. Metallica for their shameless and obvious sell out during the 90s
They were already selling a lot of records with almost no air time. They were making long, intricate songs with socially conscious lyrics. Then all of the sudden we have "Enter Sandman" or whatever that song was called and MTV and commercial radio jumps on the wagon.

13. Master of Puppets is considered their best album by many
I think it was made in '86. The music is heavier than the stuff they made in the 90s, but it is strangely melodic. It's classic metal to be sure.

50. That is a great album
One of my all-time favorites of any genre. I still remember the rave Rolling Stone review of the album and saying that Metallica should get a titanium record for their album (as opposed to gold record for X sales)
And Rolling Stone used to be pretty tough on heavy metal music.

They opened for Ozzy Osbourne on that tour, and then went out & headlined small places after that (I saw them at the Agora Ballroom in West Hartford, CT)

Their first two albums - Kill 'Em All & Ride the Lightning were very good, too. Ride the Lightning was a strong anti-death penalty song ("who made you God to say, I'll take your life from you?")

16. amen to that
they all kind of sound that way and it is getting really creepy because since that song 'rock stars' they are sounding very close to contemporary country and now alot of bands that aren't alternative are being played on alternative radio (like Hinder, etc) but to me I can't tell the difference between that and contemporary country most of the time.

I gave up on the radio a long, long time ago though (we don't have an "alternative station here, but it'd probably suck if we did). I only ever hear it when I'm in a car with someone.

20. It's strange that you should say that
Because Hinder's hit, oh I can't think of it now- something about him calling up his ex-girlfriend and talking about how they never really got over each other- was immediately remade by a country artist and is a big hit on country radio.

23. I don't know
Lack of creativity? Riding coattails?

But the person who brought that up is right in that some of the new rock acts have a country influence to them. I look for "Hey there, Delilah" by the Plain White T's to be remade as a country song next. Throw in some twangy vocals and voila- country song.

squeezing that dollar for all it's worth. I am a fan of country, but not the contemporary, 'pop' country

(Hank 3 puts it best here:

and I like alternative, but this is not alternative, it's something kind of genre-less stuff that is kind of all-purpose nothing.
