OK. Let's talk hair. Cuts. Color . Prices. Male and female.
I find it astonishing that the media has made such a big deal of John Edwards'
$400. haircut. It certainly isn't news that some salons will charge that much
to send a person out to your hotel/office to cut your hair. With all the fascination with celebrity in this country, surely a huge segment of the population is aware of the cost of such service.

As a resident of New York, what do you think the chances are that Hillary's paid
more than $400. for cut and color at a name salon? I found this website
listing some of the top salons in NYC--and some of their celebrity clients--
and you can see that $400. is quite usual for celebrity clients.

http://blog.johnedwards.com/story/2007/6/10/10646/7882

So, what's the most you ever paid for a haircut? Cut and color?
Where was it?

On my 50th birthday (2001), I had a day at a local (Chapel Hill, NC) salon/spa,
where I was given the worst haircut of my life. Two days later,
hubby and I were leaving for London and a week of theater. I was in tears
I looked so awful. When we arrived at our London hotel, I asked for
a recommendation for a salon. I took the appointment--happy to get it--
and paid 200 pounds for a cut/color (and tip) to fix the disaster that had been done to me at a top salon (?!) in Chapel Hill. The exchange rate at the time
was about $1.66, I believe. So the London services were $332 on top of the $290. I'd paid in Chapel Hill that included facial,
manicure, pedicure, haircut, make-up,and tip on the day spa package.

Anybody else care to share hair stories?

7. The most I've paid
is $190. That was for a double process color (base & foils), deep conditioning, a cut & blow out. My hairdresser does a great job and no one knows that I'm really totally grey haired.

The worst I've ever had was about 30 years ago when I had a perm done. The hairdresser didn't put the neutralizer in on time and my hair was burnt so badly, it looked like poodle hair. It then started falling out in clumps. I made a HUGE scene at the hairdressers when they weren't going to give me back my money. I told them I would stand at the door of the salon, pulling out the clumps of hair and telling everyone that this salon did this to my hair. Needless to say, they gave me my money back but quick after I stopped two women who were going in and told them what the salon had done. They cancelled their appointments and left. :D

Sadly, my hairdresser has moved and I'm going to have to find a new one. I miss her! Amazing how much you can trust a really GOOD hairdresser!

8. I pay a little under $200 for my cut and color every 6 weeks or so
I do have lots of hair, though. The quality I get for paying that much is astounding, and I'll never go back. As you can probably attest, the price of a costly cut is so much more worth it than the price you pay when you get a bad cut.

My wife and I cut each other's hair.

Cost is minimal. I haven't paid for a haircut in the past 5 years or so.

18. I pay fifteen bucks and my hairstylist is a freaking genius.
He owns the salon and charges really low rates, but cuts very fast.
He does an AMAZING job of cutting a person's hair to flatter their face. He's just artistic.
I've paid MUCH more for a cut and had it take twice as long, and it came out okay but nowhere near as good as when my regular stylist cuts it.

I give him a sizable tip, for certain!

19. I pay about 8.00 once or twice a year
for a box of Preference and color my hair in the bathroom. I don't change it much...mostly a vain attempt to cover the gray. And I've got a pair of scissors that I keep hidden and bring out every once in a while when I convince someone to trim off the ends.

20. my hair was ruined the other day
A hugely important occasion is coming up next week where I'll be "on stage" in front of about 600 people for a couple of hours. I went to a recommended salon. I was the first appointment of the day. (warning about that!) I had grown my hair for several months so there would be ample length to get the cut I wanted, which was just brushing the shoulders with some layering. Not hard, on good straight hair.

My stylist was interrupted at least twenty times while cutting my hair. His wife's car wouldn't start. He had to clear the answering machine. He had to make coffee. He had to answer the ringing phone. He would cut a little bit and go off to do something and then come back to cut a little bit. I was in the chair almost an hour while he hopped around.

The result is a Campbell's soup kid haircut. Round, and ragged. Not at all what we discussed, and poor execution!

I hate it.

Have you called around to find someone who can fix it for you? You'll end up with shorter hair, but you may be able to get the shape you want.

38. no
I didn't really see how bad it was until I got home. The salon is dimly lit -- apparently for a reason! Although I do know two of his regular customers who get nice cuts from him. And I think I'm just going to put a lot of product in my hair and try to make it look as if it's supposed to be ragged and lopsided.

24. I'm clearly a cheap beotch because if I had to pay over $100 for cut and processing
I'd have a heart attack. I don't think I've actually had a haircut in about a year. I'm growing it out from being very short and I can't bear to part with even enough for a trim.

25. Haircut stories?
I have been in the habit of cutting all my hair off with clippers each spring then letting it just grow. Well, it had been so long that I lost the clippers this year.

When the weather broke, I was so hot that I tried to cut my own hair with scissors. lol

Bad idea. It has almost grown out enough to where I can go to a barber and have it fixed. I haven't been to a barber in years and dread having to sit still that long :D

29. The absolute cheapest (decent) hair stylist I've worked with charges $30 for a basic trim.
Edited on Mon Jun-11-07 02:04 PM by BlueIris
Fees start going up exponentially after that--any styling, highlighting, coloring, etc is going to tack on an extra $20-40, minimum. And that's in a relatively dingy little suburb in Western OR. Most of my friends in the Portland, Seattle, Bay Area pay at least $60 for their basic "clean up" haircut. They think I am beyond cheap.

The main reason I just have people do the basic cut though is why I never got ruffled over the Edwards hair issue: I have problem hair. It looks a lot like JE's, actually. Thin and fine and dry and although I do have a lot of it, I have a slightly odd head shape that resists elaborate styling, unless it is done very, very well. To get any kind of styled haircut that "works" is going to require the stylist to put in a lot of effort. I wouldn't be at all surprised if the next time I ask someone to do that for me, which I was planning to do soon, the bill winds up being $150+.
